A TV news anchor had a secret final date with a mystery man before vanishing in a chilling mystery that has captivated viewers.

Missing news star Jodi Huisentruit was seen having drinks on a deck with a man 10 days before she vanished into thin air, a private investigator has claimed. Police officers found her belongings strewn about her Mazda Miata car in the car park when they went to her home at 7.13am for a welfare check. Neighbours had reported screams and there were signs of a struggle.

PI Steve Ridge has now revealed information about her "final fling" that had previously only been made available to police and the FBI. "Through my digging, I learned that Jodi had a very secret ‘final fling’ with a man she met just 10 days before she went missing," he said to The Sun.

Ridge tracked down the man police originally declared as a person of interest, but he has since been cleared. The PI said Huisentruit - who was declared legally dead in 2001 - "had strong admirers."

It is possible that "jealously" played a part in her disappearance and death and a new lover may have upset someone else who had their eye on her.

The disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit

Huisentruit went missing on June 27, 1995 in Mason City, Iowa. The news anchor had called to work to say she had overslept and was going to be late.

She didn't show up for her 6am broadcast and a scream was heard coming from her property. Police arrived during a welfare check to find her car and belongings strewn around and found a bent car key and a red shoe, along with signs of a struggle.

A palm print was also found, but the case went cold and nobody has ever been fingered for the killing. Her mother believes her daughter's body is at the bottom of a lake near her home, while her sister Mary Lee Moberg thinks a man was stalking her, the Des Moines Register reported.

On the 27th anniversary of her disappearance, her family posted a statement on the findjodi.com website that said they still felt "pure anguish" at their loss. "It’s now been 28 years since our Jodi went missing, and it is so hard to put into words the emotions we are feeling as we mark yet another year without answers and justice in her case," they said.

The family continued: "28 years since we last saw her smile, heard her laugh, or had a chance to hug her and tell her how much we love her. 28 years of not being able to share in experiences and make memories together with her...

"We know that along with us, you feel the pain and agony over Jodi’s case still being unresolved. Jodi lived her life as an optimist, and she had a great passion for living life to the fullest.

"She was a bright light in this world, and you would often hear her exclaim “I love life!” We know that she would want us to be happy, be positive about the future, and to make the most out of our lives. However, we have to admit that, as much as we remind ourselves to do so, sometimes it is just too hard to feel this way."

A secret lover?

Ridge said Huisentruit was in a brief but intense relationship before she went missing. The couple spoke "just about every day and she initiated the calls" and it was a " very fast connection."

He has even met the mystery man and was given a tour of the home he stayed in while he was in Mason City. "That home is the last place Huisentruitwent on a 'date' before she went missing," said Ridge.

The pair had drinks together overlooking the lake in a romantic encounter just days before Huisentruit disappeared. Rudge took a photograph of where they drank together and it proved to be a "powerful picture."

Before tragedy struck, the pair saw a potential long-term on the horizon. It ended with the man as a person of interest, under surveillance from police who also looked through his rubbish.

He was eventually cleared after arousing no suspicion and Ridge, meanwhile, believes the killer was someone who committed anything but "a random act of violence" and was not a stalker. He suspects the red Maza, not owned by Huisentruit, was an extravagant gift from a keen admirer.

Jodi's family said: "We have our moments when we feel very sad, bitter, frustrated, and angry that this happened to our sweet Jodi and to our family. Jodi had such a bright future ahead of her, and she should be here every day enjoying it. She deserves better, and we continue to pray that someone will come forward with the missing piece that will finally solve this case and give Jodi the justice she deserves."

Law enforcement has said they are treating the case as an active investigation.
