Prepare yourselves to step back in time to the '90s when one of the most iconic celebrity couples cemented themselves in history. We're talking, of course, about David and Victoria Beckham, who in 1999 tied-the-knot in a lavish and surreal £750,000 wedding with everything from golden thrones to matching purple outfits.

Netflix has dropped its new documentary BECKHAM, which takes viewers through the Manchester United and England footballer's meteoric rise to global fame. Aside from the football icon's journey to stardom, the four-part series will also share no-holds-barred details about his love story with Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and their family together.

The couple first met in 1997 at a Manchester United charity match and were quickly dubbed ‘Posh and Becks’ as they started dating. By January 1998, the couple announced their engagement with Victoria presenting her enormous diamond ring to the world. The wedding certainly lived up to the hype when it finally arrived in July 1999 with an unbelievable Robin Hood theme and star-studded guest list.

Here, we look back at ‘Posh and Becks’ crazy '90s wedding…

An 'intimate' affair

Just months before David and Victoria exchanged vows, they had just become parents to their eldest son Brooklyn, born in March 1999. They insisted the big day would be an "intimate" affair, but the costs and details would suggest otherwise…

Behind the big day was Bentley’s Entertainments, who had organised Elton John’s Birthday to Princess Anne’s 40th, to plan the highly-publicised wedding with no expense spared. After saying ‘I do’ in a small chapel nearby, the chose Dublin’s 15th century Luttrellstown Castle to celebrate - which had famously hosted none other than Queen Victoria in 1844 and 1900.

Magazine deals

With a Robin Hood theme, the décor revolved around deep greens, purple and burgundy with apples and ivy weaved in wherever possible. The couple sold their rights to their matrimony to OK! Magazine for £1million - breaking all previous records for celeb photoshoots.

David rocked up at the venue in a £230,000 Bentley Azure with his fresh highlights and a striking cream suit and matching cravat designed by Timothy Everett. When Victoria arrived on her Bentley Arnage, she was wearing a stunning strapless, floor-length satin Vera Wang gown said to have cost $100,000. She also had a diamond and gold crown custom-built by Slim Barret, who had previously crafted accessories for Princess Diana.

During the three-course wedding dinner, an 18-piece string orchestra played renditions of the Spice Girls chart topping hits before they cut the cake at 10pm. Followed by speeches from loved ones, the couple then had their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s It Had to Be You. Who can forget the couple each having a golden throne too?

Outfit changes

The power couple didn’t stick to just one outfit however - with a truly shocking outfit change during the night. Created by Antonio Berardi, David donned a vibrant purple suit while Victoria swapped into her bright purple dress. Speaking about the outfit on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs since, David said: “I look like the guys out of Dumb & Dumber when they went to that party and wore those ridiculous outfits. I even had a top hat in purple. Unbelievable. What was I thinking?”

While the wedding was nothing short of extravagant, the guest list did remain “intimate” with just 29 guests as they exchanged their vows. As well as their newborn Brooklyn, David had his parents and sisters there, as well as his teammate and best man, Gary Neville, while Victoria had her parents and siblings, as well as Spice Girls Emma Bunton, Mel C and Mel B.
