Football fan who tragically died after match named as former stadium announcer

Leyton Orient have confirmed the fan who died during their match with Lincoln City on Tuesday night was 74-year-old man Derek Reynolds.

The League One match was abandoned after fans ran onto the pitch to alert the referee that a medical emergency had taken place in the crowd at Brisbane Road. Medics and stewards sped to the scene with Derek receiving CPR at the side of the pitch.

London Ambulance Service confirmed the lifelong supporter had sadly passed away on Wednesday and Leyton Orient have paid tribute to Derek, who previously worked as their stadium announcer.

A club statement read: "Derek was a life-long O’s supporter and he lived in Osbourne Road, a short walk from the ground for many years. As well as being a lifelong fan, Derek was heavily involved in the club and managed the club’s tannoy system during the 1990s."

Leyton Orient confirmed they will also pay tribute to Derek at their next home match against Reading on Saturday, with his family invited as guests of the club. A book of condolence will also be available for supporters.

Orient led Lincoln 1-0 when the emergency took place and play was initially allowed to continue before a number of fans came onto the pitch and sat down close to the goal.

That forced a stoppage in play before manager Richie Wellens shouted at his own fans to get off the pitch, unaware of the situation that was developing.

A statement from the League One side added: "Despite the best efforts of Derek’s fellow supporters and medical professionals from the club’s on-site paramedics and doctors, Lincoln City and the London Ambulance Service, he sadly lost his life.

"We would, once again, like to thank Derek’s fellow supporters for the way in which they conducted themselves on Tuesday night and acted to try and help the situation."
