UEFA have all but confirmed the UK and Ireland will host Euro 2028 after Turkey officially pulled out of contention to host the tournament.

"Further to the announcement on 28 July which revealed the desire of the Italian and Turkish FAs to submit a joint bid to stage UEFA EURO 2032, the UEFA administration has today written to both associations to confirm that their joint bid has been duly received and will go forward for assessment and consideration by the UEFA Executive Committee," a statement from UEFA read.

"As indicated by the FA of Türkiye with its submission of the request for a joint bid, their bid to stage UEFA EURO 2028 is consequently withdrawn.

"The award of both tournaments still requires the approval of the Executive Committee at its meeting in Nyon on 10 October. The presentations at that meeting will be an important part of the process which will take due consideration of the content of the bid submissions before reaching a decision."

Wembley Stadium and Hampden Park both hosted games at Euro 2020, with the home of English football the venue for the semi-finals and final. England famously reached their first major international final since 1966 at that tournament, but were beaten by Italy on penalties.

Hampden Park meanwhile played host to several group games and matches in the knockout rounds. Now, the Home Nations have grouped together to submit a bid to host the tournament in five years' time, which is now all but certain to win.

A joint statement from the FAs of the UK and Ireland read: "We are looking forward to presenting our bid to UEFA on 10th October. These are exciting times, and we have a very compelling EURO 2028 proposal for UEFA.

"Our bid will be ground-breaking for the Men’s EURO and will deliver lasting legacies across the whole of the UK and Ireland. We will share full details of the bid in Nyon next week and are confident that UEFA will approve our candidacy to host EURO 2028."

It was confirmed in April that Wembley (London), the Principality Stadium (Cardiff), Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London), the Etihad Stadium (Manchester), Everton Stadium (Liverpool), St James' Park (Newcastle), Villa Park (Birmingham), Hampden Park (Glasgow), the Aviva Stadium (Dublin) and Casement Park (Belfast) will be the stadiums to host the tournament.

The FA's chair Debbie Hewitt is also leading the bid team for Euro 2028. And when the final plan for the tournament was released in April, she insisted that the bid will deliver a "record-breaking" Euros.

“Our pioneering five-way partnership will deliver a record-breaking and unforgettable UEFA Euro. We will work together tirelessly to be the best partners for UEFA and to deliver on every one of our shared priorities," Hewitt said.

“We will focus on growing football, connecting with and engaging new fans, players and volunteers. We continue to invest £50million annually into grassroots football development across our five associations. Together, we want UEFA Euro 2028 to be the catalyst for a new and sustainable era for football, from the grassroots to the very top of the European game.”

Turkey will now join up with Italy to bid for the right to host Euro 2032, four years later. As it stands, they are the only bidders in the running.
