A woman was left needing stitches after a bulldog-type dog ripped into her leg.

The 55-year-old nurse said she was terrified by the incident, that happened in Paignton, Devon, on September 28. She now fears other people could be hurt unless the owner and dog are traced.

The victim has called on the police for urgent action after she limped home alone and the owner of the dog ran away from the scene near Oldway Mansion. She needed hospital treatment to stitch the bloody wound inflicted by the animal as Devon and Cornwall Police appeal for information from the public, reports DevonLive.

The incident happened at about 10pm as the nurse was walking near the Texaco garage and she noticed a man with a dog. She said: "I'm really scared of dogs so I was walking away. I heard it barking then felt it bite the back of my thigh.

"It was so sudden and really painful. The owner started pulling it and ran away towards Oldway Mansion. The only thing he said to me was "f**k off". I was really scared and anxious when I walked home.

She added: "When I looked in the mirror I could see the skin had been ripped off and the blood was really coming out." She called for an ambulance and was treated at hospital where the wound needed seven stitches.

Photos show the extent of the wound. The back of her leg has two puncture wounds and is surrounded by extensive bruising. Paramedics called police on her behalf but she says nobody has visited her and her calls to 101 have received no follow-up.

"They haven't really helped," she said. "I called for update and the police said they couldn’t do anything.. My worry is that the dog might do it again. There must be cameras in the area that police can check."

She is not certain of the exact breed of dog which bit her but says it was a brown bulldog type. She thinks she has seen it in the Bay on previous occasions. The owner is scruffy-looking, between 40 and 50 years old with shoulder length hair. He was wearing black trousers and is about 5ft 8in tall.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called at 11am on September 28 by the ambulance service who were responding to a report of a woman having been bitten on the leg by a dog. It was reported that the owner left the area on foot following the incident.

"At this time there are no viable lines of enquiry but should any relevant information be reported it will be looked into. Anyone with information which may assist is asked to call police on 101 or report via our website quoting log 250 of 28 September."
