Rory McIlroy has issued a strong warning to the US Ryder Cup team, after claiming the Europeans will defend the title they won in Rome on American soil in 2025.

Team Europe secured a 16.5-11.5 victory following a nail-biting final day at Marco Simone, reclaiming the title they lost in Wisconsin two years ago. McIlroy was central to his team's success winning four points in his five matches across the week.

The win was an important one for McIlroy in particular, who broke down in tears following his team's record-breaking defeat to the American team at Whistling Straits back in 2021.

On the back of the 2021 matchplay event, Team USA were backed for a period of unprecedented success after blowing their rivals out of the water. They have immediately been stopped in their tracks though, after losing their seventh-straight Ryder Cup away from home.

There is no doubt Scottie Scheffler and co will be raring to go back on home soil at Bethpage Black in 2025. McIlroy however clearly has no concerns of what his rivals can do whilst competing in front of a home crowd, predicting another European victory in 2025.

Speaking after the European victory in Italy, he said: "I’ve said this for the last probably six or seven years to anyone that will listen: I think one of the biggest accomplishments in golf right now is winning an away Ryder Cup. And that’s what we’re going to do at Bethpage.’’

The Northern Irishman is not wrong when discussing the tough task they face of winning a Ryder Cup away from home. The Americans have not secured victory on European soil for 30 years, with their last away win coming back in 1993.

The Europeans have endured a tough run in the US, having won just one Ryder Cup crown away from home in 15 years. That singular win was however arguably the most famous in the event's history, after José María Olazábal's team completed their " Miracle at Medinah " triumph.

Team Europe completed a remarkable comeback on the final day of the Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club in 2012, after finding themselves four points behind heading into the Sunday singles. The likes of McIlroy, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer all starred, as Olazábal's men picked up eight-and-a-half points from 12 matches, a record-equalling comeback in the Ryder Cup history books.
