Mortal Kombat 1 update improves character balancing but leaves Switch hanging

Mortal Kombat 1 players on Nintendo Switch are still forced to suffer with bad visuals and animations, as the game's newest update focuses on current-gen consoles only.

Mortal Kombat 1 is a very successful reboot of NetherRealm Studio’s iconic gory fighting game. And though it launched in a pretty flawless state (at least on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S) it still wasn’t able to dodge the day one patch that’s all but mandatory for modern AAA releases. In the case of the Nintendo Switch version, said patch crucially enabled the story campaign and online gameplay. Less than three weeks out from release there’s another list of patch notes for the new Mortal Kombat 1 update to dive into.

In this instance, the update for Mortal Kombat’s latest entry is focussed on fixing issues with localisation and addressing certain bugs, but mainly providing better balancing for specific fighters by altering how their moves work. The Mortal Kombat 1 update – as fully detailed on the game’s official website – takes specific issue with certain attacks “not working correctly against high parry special moves”. Quite a big problem in a competitive online fighter.

The patch, which is live and available to download now, makes it so a lot of characters’ moves either can or can no longer be high parried. Raiden’s Electric Fly, for instance, is one of the many manoeuvres that falls into the latter camp, while Scorpion’s Twisted Kyo attack now can be accounted for and so on. Either way, if you main one of the Mortal Kombat characters affected by these balance changes, it’ll be worth scouring the patch notes in full to see whether your strategy has been impacted.

Interestingly, the new Mortal Kombat 1 update does nothing to address the state of the Nintendo Switch version, which was developed by standalone studio Saber Interactive. Players who have purchased the game are making their frustration known, too, as in the replies to the patch notes announcement tweet there are several, shall we say, less than enthusiastic responses.

According to creative director Ed Boon in a recent interview with BBC Newsbeat, he stated that the Nintendo Switch version will “absolutely be getting an update” following fan outcry over how it looks and performs. There’s still no word on when that will be. If you’re a PlayStation or Xbox Mortal Kombat player with a current-gen console, however, here’s the full list of Mortal Kombat 1 patch notes.

General Gameplay Adjustments

  • Move list corrections
  • Localization fixes
  • Fixed an issue that could cause Player 2 to push their opponent away further during certain combo sequences
  • Fixed an issue that could cause buffered Kombo Attacks Strings & buffered 2in1-cancelled non Enhanced Special Moves to not be performed if a Kameo Ambush attack that can be canceled or branched from was executed with specific timing
  • Fixed an issue causing some of Stryker’s & Sektor’s attacks to be unbreakable

Character Specific Adjustments

  • Ashrah - Fixed an issue that could cause Crushing Knee (Towards + Back Kick) to pass through opponents while attacking
  • Goro (Kameo) - Stomp is now higher priority when it & his partner’s attacks hit on the same frame
  • Havik - Decaying Guard (Back Punch, Front Punch) and Flesh Wound (Back Punch, Back Punch) no longer auto face
  • Jax (Kameo) - Ground Pound is now higher priority when it & his partner’s attacks hit on the same frame
  • Kung Lao - Kung-Kussion will now auto face when done on the landing frame after jumping over an opponent
  • Shujinko (Kameo) - Mimic Ice Klone & Ice Ball will no longer be repeated by an opponent hit by Time Stop
  • Fixed issues with the following attacks not working correctly against high parry special moves
    • Ashrah
      • God's Wrath and Demon's Wrath can now be high parried
      • Light Ascension and Dark Ascension can now be high parried
    • Baraka
      • (Air) Death Spin can no longer be high parried
      • Reflex Tester (Back + Front Punch) can no longer be high parried
      • Bleeding Foot (Back + Front Kick) second hit can no longer be high parried
    • General Shao
      • Power Strike can now be high parried
      • Fixed parry inconsistency between Devastator and Klassic Kahn. Both can no longer be high parried
    • Johnny Cage
      • Ball Buster can now be high parried
      • Rising Star can now be high parried
      • Shadow Kick can now be high parried
    • Kenshi
      • Sento Stance Lost Way (Forward + Back Punch, Back Punch, Front Punch) can no longer be high parried
