Robbie Williams has been slammed after he asked for shoplifting tips.

The former Take That star has angered store bosses as he took to social media seeking advice. The multi-millionaire Angels hitmaker asked his followers: "Thinking of getting into shoplifting. Anyone got any tips?’’ He then followed up with a message to his 2.4million followers saying: “I’m just going to the shops... anyone want anything?’’

Robbie also posted a photo after his shopping trip, where he said he managed to get “some scotch guard, an umbrella and a figurine of St. Joseph”. However, the singer's gag didn't go down well with some. His joke comes amid shoplifting being at an all-time high and costing retailers over £1 billion a year.

In response to Robbie, Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre For Retail Research, said: “The Robbie Williams comment is a disgrace.’’ James Lowman, chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores, said: “Dealing with theft definitely isn’t funny for the thousands of retailers that are being targeted on a daily basis.’’ While Luke Johnson, chief executive officer of Gail’s Bakery, said: “A vastly rich ex-pop star mocking a serious social and economic problem shows a celebrity truly lost in showbiz.’’

However, many of Robbie's fans joined in the jokes and they shared cheeky tips. The Rock DJ is set to give his fans an intimate look into his life in a "raw, honest and real" documentary coming soon to Netflix. He will star in the four-part self-titled programme, made up of 'hundreds of hours' of previously unseen footage. Using 30 years of 'intimate' clips from Robbie's never-seen-before 'personal archives', the hotly anticipated special celebrates the chart-topping artist's 25th solo career anniversary.

Robbie and his wife Ayda's four children, Teddy, ten, Charlie, eight, Coco, four, and Beau, three, appear to be included in the Netflix documentary. One final scene in the trailer shows the singer talking to one of his younger children. He tells them: "You'll be able to watch the documentary when you're much older." The youngster is seen asking his dad "what happened?" before he replies: "A lot."

After leaving boyband Take That in 1995, Robbie has gone on to rack up seven number one singles and a total of 31 top 10 hits. His newly released album XXV features re-recorded versions of his classic hits including Let Me Entertain You, She's The One, Feel, Millennium as well as new tracks including new hit Lost, Disco Symphony, More Than This, and The World And Her Mother.

A press release for the show reads: "Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of his solo career, this is the definitive 4-part documentary series on the most successful UK solo artist of all time. Featuring hundreds of hours of intimate, never-before-seen personal archive spanning 30 years. Exclusive access to Robbie and helmed by an acclaimed filmmaking team including Asif Kapadia as an EP; this culture-defining series is the first of its kind to explore the real human being behind the salacious headlines."
