A Ryder Cup fan who was dubbed "Colonel Sanders" thanks to his all-white outfit has been filmed diving into a lake to celebrate Europe's epic win in the major golf tournament.

The fan managed to escape security at the Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome, Italy, and jumped in the water with his clothes and shoes on moments after Tommy Fleetwood guaranteed that Europe regain the trophy from the United States. The clip shows a grey-haired gentleman evading security while running towards the water.

As he gets close to the lake, he removes his hat, ditches it, and then jumps into the water where he celebrates the huge win. According to reports on social media, other fans followed and jumped in as well.

A person wrote: "Someone's after Colonel Sanders' secret recipe." And another commented: "When you find the perfect blend of 11 herbs and spices." One more said: "The most excited fan out there!"

Someone joked: "Bro needed to cool down and went for it." Another added: "He just wanted to swim." Italy is still experiencing warm weather, with highs of 29C recorded today.

After Rickie Fowler found the water from the tee on 16, Fleetwood capitalised, birdieing the short par four thanks to a concession to move two-up with two to play, and confirming a dramatic Ryder Cup win for the home team. Amid Fleetwood's heroics at the 16th, Justin Thomas added a point for the US at the 18th over Sepp Straka, but the job was already done for Luke Donald's team. The victory became official soon after after Fowler conceded at the 17th to spark wild celebrations.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the win, Fleetwood said: "I didn't want it to come down to one of us at the back. I can't wait to see the rest of the guys, the captain, the vice captains, our wives, our families and the staff. I'm so happy to play a part in it. It's been a bit bigger than I thought it would be when I saw the draw.

"I'm so proud. We have an amazing group of people, we always do. This year has been very different and the landscape has changed for Team Europe but I couldn't wish for a better bunch of people to do with this. We are one gigantic family and the bonds you make last a lifetime. This is just so cool."
