Lorenzo Insigne became embroiled in an angry argument with a Toronto fan, shouting "f*** you" at the supporter.

Tensions are escalating at the Major League Soccer club as they endure a dreadful season, with the Reds rock bottom of the Eastern Conference. Insigne arrived in Canada in the summer on a contract that made him one of the MLS' highest-paid players.

But he has endured a difficult time at BMO Field, scoring just four goals in 17 appearances since his arrival. The Italian is currently sidelined with injury, with Toronto having won just one of their last 18 games in all competitions.

To make matters worse, Saturday saw FC Cincinatti score a late winner to lift the Supporters Shield in Toronto. The fortunes of the two sides could not be more contrasting, with Toronto having registered just 22 points this season.

Frustrations are starting to burst into the open, with Insigne coming in for particular criticism given his hefty wages. The attacker was forced to watch Saturday's game from the stands when he became involved in an argument with a fan.

It is not known how the confrontation started, but Insigne was seen shouting "f*** you" at a man before pointing and shouting "respect". He then walked back inside as other fans were seen laughing.

Insigne has not yet addressed the incident on social media, but there is clear anger in the air amid an awful season. There are three games remaining, but Toronto need to claim another point to avoid setting a record for their worst ever campaign.

Head coach Bob Bradley was sacked at the end of July, with Terry Dunfield filling in as interim boss for the rest of the season. He is set to be replaced by former Canada head coach John Herdman shortly and that change cannot come soon enough it seems.

Though Herdman is set to take over from Sunday, it is thought he could ask Dunfield to take charge for the next two games. And while the interim coach praised Cincinnati, he has admitted that his time in charge had been a tough experience.

"I think they're a very good side that's well balanced, and they don't give you a ton and then keep coming and punish mistakes. They're a top, top team and have found a way to win in this league," he said.

"I've been saying this for the last 15 weeks that I'm very fortunate to have had the opportunity. It's been tough for sure. But there's been some nice moments as well. I will need more time to breathe to go through it. I'm sure there's some stuff we do differently, too."
