Jerome Boateng is on the verge of returning to Bayern Munich just a week after a court verdict for assault and insult was overturned.

The defender only left the Allianz Arena back in 2021 following a hugely successful decade in Bavaria. He joined French side Lyon on a free transfer.

According to reports in Germany, an emotional return to Bayern is now on the cards for Boateng. As per Sky Deutschland, Bayern bosses want to sign the 35-year-old, who is currently without a club. Advanced talks are reported to have taken place between the two parties, with Boateng fit and ready to return.

He has yet to undergo a medical ahead of putting pen to paper on a deal. The former German international is likely to be drafted in as injury cover after a fresh round of talks on Sunday.

Former Ajax and Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt is currently on the sidelines, as is youngster Tarek Buchmann. Bayern’s other central defensive options include Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae.

Boateng made 364 appearances during his previous stint with the German giants. He lifted 10 Bundesliga titles, five German Cups and two Champions League titles in that time.

The veteran also helped his nation to the World Cup in 2014. Despite his previous success with Bayern, his last few seasons have courted controversy.

A Munich court found Boateng guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend in September 2021, charges which he denied. He was eventually handed a 60-day sentence of daily fines accounting for around €1.8 million (£1.5m).

That was appealed, with the punishment then being changed to 120 days worth of fines totalling €1.2 million (£1.04m). Under German law, a person is considered to have a criminal record with fines totalling more than 90 days.

That decision was appealed, with an appeals court in Bavaria overturning the verdict and thus moving the case back to a lower court. Bavaria’s Supreme State Court allowed appeals from both Boateng, who alleged bias by the trial judge, and prosecutors.

Bayern currently sit third in the Bundesliga standings after an undefeated start to the latest campaign. They have won four of their six opening fixtures after being made to come from 2-0 down to RB Leipzig on Saturday - Harry Kane and Leroy Sane finding the net.

They are next back in action on Tuesday evening against Danish side Copenhagen in the Champions League. It appears unlikely that Boateng will arrive in time for that game with eyes turning to next weekend’s clash with Freiburg.
