Meanwhile, a fourth follower commented: "So sad. I didn't know. I'm so sorry. I found out via Ann this morning. One of the nicest people I've met. God, we had some laughs. All love to all you Michelles."

Another commented: "Oh my goodness, I'm so so sorry to read this! We send you so much love. May she rest in peace, God bless ." Vicki's heartbreaking announcement comes just hours after it was revealed her role as Jo Cotton on EastEnders had been left open for her.

Viewers last saw Jo walking away from Albert Square with an eyewatering £50,000 of Kathy Beale's money in order to finally divorce their husband, Rocky, who was guilty of committing bigamy. But as fans were left wondering whether her feistiness will be seen again, she's hinted that she could possibly return to Walford.

She told the Metro: "I think they've left it open, that was the thing and hopefully, talk soon! That would be great." Discussing the reaction to her character, Vicki told the outlet: "I loved it. People were ringing me up saying 'Oh my God, we love this character!' And the funny thing is that when you're doing EastEnders, people defend you. I'm having a go at Rocky and then a fan will say 'Oh, she was really mean to Rocky', and then you'll get another fan going 'Well, what do you expect? He walked out on her 25 years ago! She didn't know whether he was dead or alive!"
