A Premier League footballer owed a dentist £25,000 after getting veneers and could've faced debt collectors, it's been claimed.

The unnamed star reportedly got his teeth sorted at a London-based dental studio. He received custom-made porcelain moulds, ensuring he had one of the brightest and widest smiles in England's top flight.

Yet it's believed the footballer didn't pay for the treatment because he thought he was getting a freebie thanks to his fame. That reportedly forced the dentist to call in debt collectors to chase the bill and the player has now stumped up the cash.

It's claimed court action was launched against the footballer to force him into action. The news comes after a debt collection agency claimed that requests to chase up dental customers who owe cash has increased by 20 per cent of late.

"He was a Premier League footballer but it ended up going through the court process and eventually we got him to pay," Chris Spencer of Frontline Collections told The Sun while discussing the anonymous star's case. "He was kind of all over the place and it was well known he was a bit of a playboy. I think he has calmed down now."

Countless footballers have had their teeth done in recent years, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Roberto Firmino. Managers, such as Jurgen Klopp and Brendan Rodgers, have also showed up to press conferences with a fresh smile.

Dr Robbie Hughes, the owner of Dental Excellence UK, provided new smiles for the England squad ahead of Euro 2020, held in the summer of 2021. Those grins almost paid off for Gareth Southgate's side, who lost on penalties to Italy in the final at Wembley.

"I'm very proud and privileged to be in that position," Hughes told The Independent in 2021 when asked what it was like to work with footballers. "Most of these guys could probably go anywhere in the world for dentistry and they choose to come and see myself."

One of Hughes' biggest clients was Firmino, who has since left Liverpool to play in Saudi Arabia. The dentist added: "It was such an extreme transformation, which looks magnificent – he wanted really white teeth and we were able to deliver that for him.

"Since the awareness of that, we get clients coming in every day asking for Roberto’s colour teeth. The Liverpool boys... their favourite statement is always, 'Top Robbie top, top'."
