A dog - believed to be an XL Bully - was Tasered by police and put in a wheelie bin after attacking two people in the street.

The victims - a man and woman- were mauled by the hound on a residential street in Coventry on Thursday afternoon when police sprung to action, using the stun gun. The officers were then seen placing the creature in a bin as a temporary measure to stop other members of the public from seeing it.

No arrests have been made, although West Midlands Police confirmed the dog would be destroyed following the attack which left the man and woman with nasty injuries. The male victim, police said, is related to the dog's owner.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called to Purcell Road in Coventry shortly before 4pm today [Thursday] to reports that a man and a woman had suffered injuries after being attacked by a dog. The man and woman were taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

"Officers Tasered the dog, which is believed to be a Bully-type breed and then placed it in a wheelie bin to ensure the public’s safety. We are in the early stages of our investigation but believe the owner of the dog is related to the man who was attacked.

"No arrests have been made at this stage. We understand this was a very distressing incident for anyone who witnessed it. We will be having extra officers in the area to offer reassurance. The dog will be put to sleep."

The attack comes amidst a month of headlines regarding the XL Bully, after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed the breed posed a danger to the country and that they would be banned by the end of the year. His statement follows an ongoing spate of attacks involving the breed, including the death of Ian Price in Staffordshire earlier this month.
