Tyler Herro saw the funny side after the Miami Heat missed out on trading for Damian Lillard.

The 33-year-old completed a shock move to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday after spending 11 years with the Portland Trail Blazers. If the six-time All-Star was going to leave the Western Conference team many thought his next destination would be the Heat.

Lillard mentioned on more than one occasion how much he likes the city of Miami, and basketball-wise the team would have been a perfect fit for him given Miami’s need for a consistent scorer. But last season’s NBA finalists missed out on the opportunity to acquire Lillard’s services and that means no more rumours of Herro being traded to facilitate a move for him.

But the 2022 NBA Sixth Man of the Year joked those rumours are only on hold for the time being. A social media user wrote: “Congratulations to Tyler Herro for surviving the final boss of all trade rumours in Damian Lillard. Bro’s beaten everything they’ve thrown at him.” Herro would reply: “Until next summer.” The Heat player’s name has been involved in several trade rumours throughout his career.

For example, ESPN reported the Heat offered a trade package that included Herro and two first-round draft picks for Lillard. But as it stands the former Kentucky college player has three years remaining on his contract after signing a four-year, $130 million contract extension in October 2022. Herro took to social media and had some more words to say regarding Lillard’s trade to the Bucks.

This came after his Heat teammate Jimmy Butler seemed to question the legitimacy of the move. “Yo NBA, y’all need to look into the Bucks for tampering,” the six-time All-Star said. “I’m just going to put that out there. Y’ll didn’t hear it from me, but I heard it from somebody.”

Herro was in agreement as he issued a tweet that read: “What he said.” For a long time, the Heat were the favorites to land Lillard this offseason - but he has now ended up in Milwaukee as part of a three-team trade involving the Phoenix Suns.

Thursday afternoon, Herro issued another comment on the Lillard trade, claiming he would buy a Bucks jersey with their newest player’s name on the back. "In all seriousness… as a kid from Milwaukee, I’m grabbing me a Dame jersey," Herro tweeted.

Following his departure from the Blazers, Lillard took to social media yesterday afternoon to address the fans. “The casuals won't be addressed but the Trailblazers fans and city of Portland that I love truly will be ... and they will be addressed truthfully,” he wrote on X. “Stay tuned. Excited for my next chapter! @Bucks.”

Following the blockbuster trade Bucks president Peter Feigin and general manager Jon Horst said in a statement: "Today is an exciting day for Milwaukee. When you have the rare opportunity to pair one of the premier NBA players with a highly versatile roster that has lofty goals, you go for it. And we're thrilled to welcome seven-time All-Star Damian Lillard to the Bucks."
