A school jokingly asked for a former pupil to get in touch after discovering an item of uniform left on its roof two decades ago - and the former schoolboy did just that.

Pupils around the country are urged to name their belongings in case they go missing for any reason and need to be found by their owners. The lesson was reinforced when a member of staff at Huxley Primary School in Chester discovered an old jumper covered in moss which had been left on its roof. Incredibly, inside its collar was a name tag which had survived the elements. When they checked it was of a pupil who had left 20 years ago.

It wrote in a Facebook post: “Here at Huxley we are always saying if an item of uniform is named it will find its way back to you. Therefore would TOMMY CRANK -AGED 27 like to collect his jumper from the school?

“It has been on our roof for approximately 20 years so it may need a good clean. Whilst I often take home items of uniform to wash, I think I will leave this one for you! Andy found this tied up in a ball on the roof!”

Hilariously, Tommy - who now goes by Tom - replied to the post and asked the school: “Hi, can I have my jumper please?” The post was liked more than 800 times and shared more than 500 as people laughed at the replies.

One person said: “Tom, please tell me you’re going to collect it, photographic proof needed.” Another added: “More importantly, where do you get those name labels from? If this one can withstand 20 years of all seasons and still be attached to the jumper…I need to get some asap!” Another said: “I’m in Australia … this jumper would never have survived our harsh summers. This is hilarious.” Another simply said: “Tom, go get your jumper mate.”

Headteacher Rachel Gourley said: “We have had such a wonderful response from the post. It has been really funny. The children have loved hearing about the jumper and look forward to Tommy collecting his jumper! It's been shared on so many primary school Facebook pages as a comical reminder to put children's names in their jumpers.

“The jumper was found on our school roof by my site maintenance office, Andy Thelwell. It was screwed up in a ball and covered in moss. He was just about to put it in the bin when I said let's look at it. We untied it and saw that it was a really old school jumper. It had a name inside - Tommy Crank.

“I looked into our school records out of curiosity and discovered Tommy is now 27 - the jumper had been up there 20 years! I thought it would be fun to put a post on our school Facebook page. To my surprise, he responded to my tongue in cheek comment on our school Facebook page with 'can I have my jumper back?'

I asked if he remembered how it got up there and he said they used to roll their jumpers up in a ball and throw them over the school building from one side to the other. Obviously this never made it all those years ago. I'm just glad my post has brought a smile to so many faces today!”
