Tory says not everyone offended by Enoch Powell tweet in disastrous interview

The Conservative London mayoral candidate has insisted not everyone is offended by vile tweets lauding Enoch Powell and calling the capital “Londonistan”.

In a car crash radio interview, Susan Hall tied herself in knots as she was confronted about her social media history.

A caller on LBC challenged the Tory for retweeting a message from the far-right activist Kate Hopkins that called Sadiq Khan “the nipple height mayor of Londonistan”. Asked by a woman called Lauren in Harrow how she is “planning to represent the great Muslim community of London”, she said: “When I retweeted. Oh, no, I don't think... I think I liked it. I don't know. This was a long time ago. That wasn't in my mind. Did I retweet it? I have no idea."

When told that she had replied to the post in 2019 with “Thank you Katie!,” she said: “I can't remember doing that. I tweet or used to all the time.”

Ms Hall also liked a tweet that showed an image of Enoch Powell alongside the words: “It’s never too late to get London back!” Asked why she had done this, the mayoral candidate said: “I’ve explained that, it's never too late… it is not too late to make London better. We've got traffic jams left, right and centre.” Pushed on whether she is a fan of Powell, who famously gave his 'Rivers of Blood' speech against mass immigration, she said: “No of course not. If you're a serial tweeter, you tend to go through liking all sorts of things. If anybody is offended, then obviously I would apologise.”

Other tweets posted by Ms Hall include one in which she described Gemma Collins as a “stupid fat blonde woman”. Expressing his surprise at her response, LBC presenter Nick Ferrari said to her: “Calling someone a stupid fat blonde woman, liking a picture of Enoch Powell, talking about a nipple-height Mayor. You seem surprised people are offended.” She replied: “Some people are and some people aren't. Those that are offended. I didn't intend to cause any offence at all.”
