Landmark Covid legal action in the High Court is a fight for many more people than the 30 cases set to be heard.

This is about ordinary folk trying to hold to account a Conservative Government which patted itself on the back after the possibly avoidable deaths of their loved ones. The lack of testing in hospitals was unforgivable, as was the turning of care homes into dumping grounds for infected patients.

So the spectacle of disgraced former Health Secretary Matt Hancock trying to carve out a reality TV career makes grim viewing. With discharging untested patients into homes at the start of the pandemic ruled unlawful at an earlier hearing, it is understandable that the Government is accused of failing in its basic duty: to protect the British people.

Not UN’s fault

Will the toxic Tories, in power for 13 years, ever accept responsibility for their own mistakes, incompetence and failures? Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s department is a basket case. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is no nearer stopping the boats crossing the Channel than he was eight months ago, when he promised to do it by the year’s end.

Braverman’s characteristically inflammatory speech in the US, pretending that the United Nations’ Refugee Convention is the problem, wasn’t really about trying to find answers. It was about distracting public attention from her own uselessness and putting down a marker for the Tory crown when the Conservatives lose the next general election. Her vicious demonisation of asylum seekers and refugees fleeing brutal regimes underlined the poisonous extremism of yet another foundering, desperate Tory.

Amazing pile

EuroMillions jackpot winner Gareth Bull did an impressive thing by using lockdown to build his dream house. He got lucky for sure but he made the most of the twin opportunities offered by a bit of free time – and a huge pile of cash.
