Jill Dando's brother shares chilling theory about her death and who killed her

Jill Dando's brother believes his sister was in the wrong place at the wrong time – and wasn't an organised target.

Nigel, 71, has shared his views on the murder of his sister who was gunned down on her doorstep in west London on April 26, 1999. The BBC newsreader had been returning to her home having been at her fiancé's property in Chiswick – but Nigel claims that this was simply a flying visit.

Jill's home, 29 Gowan Avenue, was up for sale at the time as she was rarely at the property but upon her arrival at 11.32am on the day, she was shot in the head with a single bullet. Her neighbour, Helen Doble, discovered her just 14 minutes later. At 11.47am, officers from London's Metropolitan Police arrived before Jill was rushed to the nearby Charing Cross Hospital.

However, at 13.03, she was declared dead by medical staff. But while some believe that Jill was the victim of a targeted attack, her brother has other beliefs. During an appearance on ITV's Lorraine, fellow journalist Nigel said: "We followed all the theories and the twists and turns of the case.

"But when you strip it right back and you look at the roads that the police went down to follow up these theories, at the end of the day, none of them really held water, there was no evidence. My theory, which I still stick to, I don't know how true it is, people may say it's quite fanciful but that Jill was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Lorraine asked: "Do you think? That they weren't actually targeting her specifically?" As Nigel responded: "I think if you were going to target her you would have to have a plan and that plan would involve knowing where she was going to be almost at any given time, on any given day. On the day in question, she left her fiancé Alan's home in Chiswick, she was planning to call into her home to pick up a few things in Fulham and I think she was then going to go on to the BBC.

"It was just a random visit that she was making." Jill was shot with a bullet from a 9mm Short calibre-semi automatic pistol as the gun was pressed to her head. It's believed that the cartridge had been modified to reduce its charge. Her neighbour, Richard Hughes, heard a scream from Jill but believed it was somebody surprising her – not her being shot.

Seconds later, he became the only person to get a sighting of the murderer, a six-foot-tall white man, in his 40s. To this day, Jill's murderer has not been caught but shortly after her death, the BBC and other media outlets received calls claiming that Serb groups were responsible following the UK and NATO's involvement in the Kosovo War.

24 years after her murder, a new Netflix series, Who Killed Jill Dando? will examine the chilling case which gripped the nation.
