The terrifying moment a group of people were left hanging upside down on a ride was caught on camera.

Theme park lovers normally expect a few white-knuckle moments or two during their visit - but perhaps not to this extent. A ride at Canada's Wonderland in Ontario suddenly malfunctioned and left people helplessly stuck upside down for more than 30 minutes.

The Lumberjack is designed to look like a giant swinging axe and usually operates by flipping and spinning around. However, at about 10:30pm on Saturday (September 22) night those on it were left suspended in the air with their bodies the wrong way up.

Video from Jiashira Rivera showed the moment a technical issue saw the mechanism come to a stop. The riders were seen panicking after they released they were trapped, reported Daily Star.

The clip went viral on TikTok, which has had more than 552,000 views so far, and Jiashira explained that it took more than 30 minutes to free those on it.

She said in the caption that she will not be getting on the ride any time soon. Speaking to Yahoo Canada, she exclaimed: “It was terrifying, thank God nobody fell off.

"They kept telling everyone to clear up the area. Workers came in with safety harnesses, climbed up to the machine and tried resetting it."

One of the trapped riders was a 14-year-old. He said: "Me and my friends all felt the same effects and I'm pretty sure it's the same for everyone... I had so much blood going to my head."

He added that he felt as though he could not breathe properly, and noted his eyes began to feel heavy as the blood rushed to his head. He went on: “I was thankful that the workers there could get us down but it was just crazy. I wonder how much longer if we were up there [if] we could've died.”

Wonderland's director of communications Grace Peacock said maintenance and rescue crews were deployed to fix the issue and safely evacuate the ride. People who experienced discomfort were also assessed by the park's first aiders.

No riders required further medical treatment and Grace added: “The park's maintenance team responded quickly and the ride was brought down by 11:05 pm. Guests were unloaded safely.”
