Celebrity SAS contestant Jermaine Pennant has spoken out about Matt Hancock after he punched the former Health Secretary to the ground in a boxing challenge.

The England and Birmingham City footballer admitted: “It was satisfying to beat Matt in a fight I’m not going to lie. I don’t think anyone was happy to see Matt in there at first. The whole nation was unhappy with what went on, what people had to go through and what Matt got up to.

“All those feelings don’t just go away but having said that we were a team in there and we had to get on. You can judge people but everyone makes mistakes. I’ve made mistakes in the past and when you go in there you are all kind of starting a fresh.

"Yes he’s made mistakes but you are all in there working as a team so you have to give him a break and his due for that. But having said that all is not then forgiven. I don’t think we will ever really see the real Matt Hancock. I think only a few people who he is really close to will see the real him. I think he shows you what he wants you to see.

“I think the rest of us all kind of knew where we stood with each other but I just wasn’t sure with Matt. When I then saw him in the Jungle I was thinking is he trying to go in a new career direction. Is he genuine? It is really hard to tell. Seeing Matt in I’m A Celebrity was different to the version I saw. It was like seeing two different people.”

Jermaine said his experience on Celebrity SAS was “completely life-changing”. “It forced me to open up about all my childhood trauma from being a kid and the start of my career, which I’ve not really wanted to dig deep into before. I was always embarrassed to talk about it before but we were told to talk about it and write about it in the Mirror Room which was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.

“There was a lot of lifelong baggage shedded. I came back and felt like a different person. It was hard but I’ve learned I don’t have to be embarrassed or ashamed of my past. I have always had my guard up and never wanted to show people the real me too quickly but this process chipped away at it really quickly. That’s why it is such a great show. You quickly learn a lot about who you really are.”

He admitted crying on the show and afterwards and described his experience as being “more beneficial than therapy.” “You are not in a nice comfy office on the sofa. You are tired, you stink, you’re exhausted and then you are asked to open up. It’s like therapy times 10. No disrespect but you don’t feel like a therapist has gone through what you have gone through. But these guys have literally been to hell and lost friends so there is so much more weight behind what they say."
