Strictly's Adam Thomas opens up about unexpected discovery during training

Strictly Come Dancing star Adam Thomas has revealed that learning the routines ahead of his performances on the live show was a complete "shock to the system."

The 35 year old actor, who is best known for his role as Adam Barton in Emmerdale from 2009 until 2018, confessed that he is not a natural dancer and so, found learning the routines was difficult to grasp. He said: "Learning how to dance is definitely going to be the biggest challenge. Whoever I get paired up with, definitely has their work cut out because I cannot dance to save my life." Adam says he thought he could dance but quickly found out that he couldn't.

He added: " I did think I could dance, but I found out that I can’t, so, that was a bit of a shock to the system. The training is definitely going to be full-on as well. But again, I like to learn new things and I am just going to enjoy it." Adam, who is married to dance teacher Caroline Day, says that he has no dance experience and is baffled as to why he never asked for lessons from his wife.

When asked if he had any experience on the dancefloor, he replied: "No dance experience whatsoever, I have never danced before. I said this to my wife the other day, the fact that my wife is a dance teacher, and I have never learnt how to dance just baffles me."

He added:"But then she said to me that I haven’t taught her how to act either. I have had no dance experience so this is definitely a first for me but again, I am excited to learn and get out there and do my thing." The star, who is the brother of Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas, said that he has been watching Strictly for as long as he can remember. But it was his former co-star Kelvin Fletcher's stint on the BBC show that has stuck in his head.

He continued: "From the previous series I would say, my friend Kelvin Fletcher did it and he won it. That was definitely a stand-out moment for me. Just watching him go on the Strictly journey and watching him smash it from the get-go. From the very first dance to watching him get to the final. He is probably one of the reasons why I am doing this show because I have spoken to him and he said it was an absolute joy and he said I would be ok."

His driving force appears to be the fact that he wanted to "test" himself and learn new things. He went on to say: "It’s just one of the shows I have always wanted to do for as far back as I can remember. I like to test myself and I like to learn new things. This is definitely going to be one of those shows where I will be able to do that, so here I am."
