A common debate in the workplace and most usually the home is temperature - no one seems able to agree on what temperature makes them the most comfortable with some people seemingly running hot at all times of the day and others cold. This debate has become increasingly important as the rising cost of energy bills means that many of us are having to sacrifice comfort for what is affordable.

When more vulnerable members of the family such as grandparents and babies are living with us, wanting to keep the home at a healthy and comfortable temperature is an even bigger worry and responsibility. According to the HSE, the ideal temperature for a baby's room is somewhere within the range of between 16-20 degrees Celsius and for one mum, her desire to turn up the thermostat for her little one is causing a disagreement with her husband.

Asking the Mumsnet community their thoughts, the mum to a one-year-old explained that the temperature of the downstairs area of their home is 16 degrees Celsius and that she felt that the heating should be turned on. Her husband does not agree and is "adamant" that it does not need to be as it is only September.

Sparking debate in the replies, users were divided in opinion with some agreeing with the concerned mum and others disagreeing and instead joining the husband's camp. One user siding with the husband wrote, "16 degrees is fine. Just put another layer of clothes on the child," while another agreed with this sentiment and said, "Wouldn't cross my mind to put it on at that".

Another wrote, "16 at night? No way would the heating be going on! Extra layer on the baby, we are still sleeping with the fan on!", as someone else posted a strongly worded comment that said, "If my other half wanted the heating on right now it would be a hell no".

However, there were some who agreed with the mum, as one commenter chimed in and said, "I would be cold at 16. It doesn't matter what month it is if you are cold. Is the cost of the heating the issue rather than the principle of what month it is?"

Another wrote, "I'd have the heating on. 16 degrees is too cold for me to be comfortable," while someone else who also sided with the mum added, "I would start to worry a bit about damp at that temperature or below."
