BBC Breakfast suffered an awkward blunder this morning when footage of Huw Edwards was aired by mistake.

The flagship morning show played an old episode of Newswatch from 2017 but dramatically pulled the footage three minutes in when Huw appeared.

Huw is currently suspended from the station after being named as the BBC presenter accused of paying a teen for explicit images. He has not appeared on television since presenting the BBC News on July 5th.

However, this morning Huw was seen on BBC One fronting a report about Hurricane Maria before the clip cut back to presenter Ben Thompson in the Breakfast studio.

Looking awkward, Ben told viewers: "So you might have noticed, the eagle eyed viewers amongst you, that that was quite an old episode of Newswatch so we will find the right one and make sure we can bring that to you a little later. So apologies, a few technical gremlins at this end."

The mistake was not missed by fans of the show at home with many taking to social media to share their confusion.

"OK, who put that old edition of Newswatch on? Was it deliberate....??? Anyway, thanks #BBC for one of the great cock-ups," joked one fan on X, formerly known as a Twitter.

Another commented: "Oh god how awkward - cut it off just as Huw came on." While a third teased: "BBC loves a repeat, doesn't it!"

An internal investigation over suspended News at Ten presenter Huw is currently underway at the BBC.

Director General Tim Davie said the corporation is conducting a fact-finding mission looking at claims against its best-known newsreader, after two police forces concluded Edwards had no criminal case to answer.

Speaking at a House of Lords communications committee in July, Davie said: “This has been a difficult affair where we have tried to calmly and reasonably navigate some difficult concerns around the allegations themselves, duty of care, privacy and legitimate public interest."

Huw was one of the BBC's most respected news presenters before the allegations emerged and one of the corporation's highest earning stars with a £435,000-a-year salary.

In July, Huw's wife Vicky Flind has named him as the BBC presenter facing allegations over payments for sexually explicit images in a statement issued on his behalf.
