This eerie CCTV footage shared from an ancient city centre street is causing people to lose their minds with speculation the clip could show a haunted bicycle in action.

The footage was taken on The Shambles, which is a historic street in York and features preserved mediaeval buildings, some dating back as far as the 14th century. The street is narrow, with many timber-framed buildings with jettied floors that overhang the street by several feet. York is one of the oldest cities in England, dating back to 71AD and the Roman Empire and has a rich tradition of 'paranormal' activity.

But in all the long and spooky history of the city, this appears to be the first case of a haunted bicycle. Locals were left scratching their heads after CCTV footage was put up on the York Shambles Market Facebook page which shows The Shambles, seemingly at night when no one is around, Yorkshire Live reports.

While initially looking like a normal scene, soon a bike emerges from a side street, with no rider. It slowly meanders into frame, with its pedals unmoving. It then hits a kerb and comes to a complete stop, still stood up perfectly. However, it soon begins to slowly tip over, before slamming into the ground. No one at all is in sight.

York Shambles Market wrote: "Yesterday, something very strange was spotted on CCTV… and this clip gives us the chills. Theories welcome… Has anyone else noticed peculiar paranormal activity around town?"

Mark Graham, who leads the Original Ghost Walk of York, told MailOnline: 'There's quite a few stories around the Shambles area - doors that open and close into a different time, houses that disappear. I'll never forget that bicycle. York is a whole pastiche of strange goings on - a tapestry of unusual events.” He said one of the stories in the area is of a boy that appears and disappears appearing shocked to see those he appears to.

“And he haunts in the same sort of way five or six places in the city as if he's stepped into our world or we've pushed into his,” Mr Graham added. “He's called the Lost Boy - he's a mystery. Whether he rides a bicycle I do not know!”
