A passenger who filmed the horrific deliberate hit-and-run killing of a retired police chief is still on the loose — and the authorities are frantically trying to identify him so they can make an arrest.

A disturbing video circulated on social media this weekend that showed the sickening act from the perspective of the passenger in the 2016 Hyundai Elantra that mowed down retired Bell, California, Police Chief Andreas Probst in mid-August.

The driver can be heard asking the passenger if he's "ready," before the passenger replies: "Yeah, hit his ass." Seconds later, Probst is flying through the air, launched from his bicycle and into the middle of the road.

A few hours after that, he was pronounced dead at a University Medical Center, a nearby hospital. The Hyundai fled the scene at a high speed, and the driver, a 17-year-old boy, was later caught and arrested, charged with murder as an adult.

His identity has yet to be released by the authorities because of his age despite the fact that he's being tried for murder. He was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center — but the passenger was never caught. And with the horrific video going viral this past weekend, the police are desperate to catch him.

It begins with the boys cursing at passing motorists before they see Probst riding along in the biker's lane of North Tenaya Way near West Centennial Parkway on the outskirts of Las Vegas. It was around 6am on August 14.

The boys pull up behind the red-clad man in the bike lane, honk the horn of their car, then tap Probst's back tire, which sends him rocketing across the highway. Then, they laugh as they step on the gas, looking out at Probst's lifeless body. The passenger can be heard saying: "Damn, that n* got knocked out!"

The Las Vegas police said in a statement that detectives had used the video to establish intent, which allowed them to charge the 17-year-old arrestee with murder. He had also allegedly been connected to the theft of several other vehicles that same morning.

Probst's daughter Taylor said she was alerted to the accident when her dad's Apple Watch indicated that he had fallen. She and her mum Crystal rushed to the scene, which was about three miles from their home, but they instantly knew it was grim — especially as Crystal had prior law enforcement experience, she told local news sources.

Probst was known for his laugh and his love of coffee, family and friends said. He had taken up cycling after moving to Las Vegas in 2009 following his retirement from the police force. He had taken a new job as a security consultant and had started cycling to stay in shape.

Taylor said her dad was "like a ray of sunshine," and Crystal described him as "an amazing man, a husband, a father, a brother." A memorial service was held in his honour earlier this month, commemorating his life and 35 years of service with the Bell Police Department.
