When Russell Brand married Laura Gallacher in 2017, he was officially joining a sporting family.

The controversial comedian has been accused of rape, sexual assaults and emotional abuse during a seven-year period. He denies all the allegations, which are being investigated by former employers the BBC, Channel 4 and production company Banijay UK, as well as The Metropolitan Police and Los Angeles Police Department.

In a video posted on YouTube before the details of the allegations were made public, Brand stated that all his relationships had been consensual. His wife Laura, with whom he has two children, is standing by him alongside her sister, former Sky Sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher.

Laura and Kirsty are the daughters of legendary golfer Bernard Gallacher, who captained the European team to victory in the 1995 Ryder Cup. The 74-year-old is reportedly supportive of Brand’s relationship with his daughter, which first started in 2007.

Brand, who is 12 years older than his 36-year-old wife, has two children with Laura: Mabel and Peggy. Having gone through a turbulent relationship in which they broke up and got back together on four occasions, they were married in a small service at Remenham Church near their £3million home in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, in August 2017. The couple are now expecting a third child.

Back in 2016, when the announcement of their first pregnancy was made, Bernard and his wife Lesley said they were “very happy” with the news. Speaking from their home Ascot, Berkshire, Lesley told the Daily Record : “Of course it’s positive and we are very happy, but I’d rather not say anything about it now.”

Around the same time, MailOnline reported that Bernard was seen chatting happily with Brand at an event at the prestigious Wentworth Golf Club. It hadn’t always been happy families between the two, however.

Bernard had reportedly not been happy with Brand dating his daughter while she was 18 years old. The Daily Mail reported that they split in 2007 at the behest of Bernard, who was ‘concerned about the age gap’. “He begged her to end it,” a friend told the newspaper.

Having sent his daughter to the expensive St George’s school in Ascot, Bernard was reportedly not best pleased by Laura’s choice of partner. As a source told The Mail: “Bernard is a very strait-laced guy, with no side to him. So in that sense he and Brand are chalk and cheese.”

Bernard’s life changed in August 2013 when he suffered a heart attack while delivering an after-dinner speech in Aberdeen. As he later told The Mirror : “For the next five days I was in intensive care, battling for my life while my family, including my wife Lesley and children Kirsty, Laura and Jamie, kept a constant vigil.

“The doctors were painting a pretty bleak picture and they also didn’t know if I had suffered from any brain damage.”
