The boss of England’s worst-polluting water company has been handed an extra £1.3m this year despite the government’s ban on bonuses for failing firms.

Even though Thames Water’s chief executive Chris Weston informed MPs that the company’s continued existence as a private entity depended on leniency from Ofwat, the regulator has imposed nearly the highest permissible fine.

The judge described the costs incurred by Thames Water in the case as "eye-watering."

Thames Water is working to repair the damaged pipe on Alleyn Road in Dulwich, south London, but this has resulted in thousands of people having no water or experiencing lower pressure than usual for some time.
