The UK's most unpopular job has been revealed - despite the fact it could make you a handy salary.

Despite the role offering generous advertised salaries, tax specialist is the least desired role in the country, according to new research. The project analysed over 1 million UK job vacancies advertised on a popular job site last month, showing which have the lowest interest from jobseekers.

Tax specialist positions have the lowest average click rate by ad, despite advertised salaries averaging £55,000. Demands of a specialist include checking and completing tax returns, auditing clients' tax records, explaining tax law to clients and finding ways to reduce their liability.

Adzuna said their research shows that Brits are now looking for more than money in their choice of job, such as workplace culture, values and a good work-life balance. The second most unpopular role was grill cook, followed by au pair and childminder positions. Humanities teachers and audit specialists also ranked among those with the least appeal. The lack of interest from jobseekers is a blow to these sectors, many of which are already struggling to find staff.

Nursery practitioner was 14th on the list of most unpopular jobs, with over 2,100 roles lying open in August. Advertised salaries for this job average £22,716. It comes after the Trades Union Congress (TUC) found that 95% of English councils are struggling to recruit experienced childcare workers, while 62% of early assistants and practitioners earn less than the real Living Wage. Parents in work are also feeling the knock-on effects of this shortage, with one in four people who use formal childcare now saying that the cost takes up more than 75% of their take home pay.

General veterinarians also made a surprise appearance on the list of least sought-after UK jobs, as over 1,800 jobs currently unfilled. Burnout and abuse from pet owners are said to be encouraging some to leave the profession, with the pandemic boom in animal ownership creating higher demand for their services. Job listings for A&E nurses and ward sisters are also attracting low interest, which comes as increased pressures lead some in health to switch sectors or seek jobs abroad.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: "Jobseekers are placing more priority on culture, values and work life balance. Even if a job offers a tempting pay cheque, if it doesn’t provide a sustainable working environment, flexibility and room to grow, jobseekers are looking elsewhere. This has led to worsening skills shortages in areas like property jobs, healthcare & nursing, and education and childcare. But it also creates an opportunity for jobseekers. These are also the jobs with the lowest competition for roles, meaning they could be great options for those looking for fast career progression, strong salaries, and increased job security."
