The owner of the world’s tallest dog made a difficult decision earlier this year to amputate his leg during his cancer battle before he tragically died this week.

Zeus, who on his hind legs stood at seven feet tall, contracted pneumonia after he had one of his legs amputated earlier this year. His owner, Brittany Davis, announced he died after a battle with cancer in an interview with Guinness World Records.

The record-breaking Great Dane has died following a month-long battle with bone cancer, after also developing pneumonia following the amputation of his right front leg. The Great Dane earned the 2022 tallest dog Guinness World Record title.

Brittany said Zeus died with his head in “his mom’s lap”. She added, “Zeus was a truly special dog. He was gentle, loving, very stubborn but always happy to see his family and many, many friends on his adventures around Dallas & Fort Worth.”

Standing at 3 ft 5.18 tall, Zeus, who celebrated his third birthday last November, was taller than the average four-year-old. She added: “Zeus packed a lot of life into three short years and was primed to beat cancer’s butt.”

Worried about the high cost of cancer treatment for pets and wanting to give Zeus the best chance of survival, Brittany, from Bedford in Texas, started a GoFundMe page for her much-loved canine after he was diagnosed with cancer in August. She set a funding target of $20,000 and over 350 people responded, raising more than $12,000 within a month.

Brittany Davis, shared the news of Zeus' passing on her GoFundMePage: "Our baby boy is gone. Our hearts are broken. He had the absolute best doctors who sat off the floor and cried with us. He fought hard, but the pneumonia was just too much. He is not in pain anymore."

Brittany, who considered Zeus her “dog child”, received the pup as a gift from her brother when he was just eight weeks old. After he grew in size, she decided to contact Guinness World Records. His height meant he could drink directly from the sink. According to The New York Post, Zeus ate up to “12 cups of food a day with the occasional fried egg for a snack.” Brittany told Guinness World Records that Zeus was ”very laid back” and strong-minded.

The American Kennel Club said: “These gentle giants sadly tend to live just 7 to 10 years— though they will certainly fill those years with several lifetimes’ worth of love.” Great Danes often live to the age of seven or 10. Great Danes are the world’s tallest breed, reaching up to 32 inches tall and 175 pounds. Female Great Danes can grow up to 30 inches and tend to weigh at 140 pounds.
