Schools in Leeds, Yorkshire, have received information from the council about a threat

Schools were forced into lockdown today after receiving a "threat" concerning the safety of pupils.

Parents were told in emails that schools in Leeds reportedly received information from the council about threatened violence to children and staff. It is unclear what the threat was, but some schools entered a "soft invacuation".

A nursery in Leeds also shut its windows and kept everyone inside, the Mirror understands, although it is not believed to have been directly threatened. Gates and doors have also been closed at schools in Leeds and Bradford. Staff are warning that an individual may attempt to gain access to schools and urging parents to stay vigilant when picking up their child.

Some pupils were kept inside all day, it was reported. Sharp Lane Primary School, Windmill Primary School and Beeston Primary School were al impacted, with Richmond Hill Academy and Ruth Gorse Academy also sent emails.

One school appeared to have its shutters down at one point, according to a parent. Another said they had received a text message from their daughter's school, in the east of Bradford, to say the school was in "emergency lockdown." West Yorkshire Police said: "We are aware of an email which has been sent to a number of schools in West Yorkshire today. This is being investigated by police and officers are providing reassurance and safety advice to affected schools."

Initial reports suggested the threat was being treated as "credible" by police.

West Yorkshire Police said in a statement: "Police are aware of an email which has been sent to a number of schools in Leeds and Bradford today. The contents of the email are being investigated by police and officers are providing reassurance and safety advice to affected schools. Contrary to some reports the force has not issued guidance to schools to ‘lockdown’ and has not stated the threats are credible.

"Officers have commenced an investigation into a potential malicious communications offence and have now made an arrest in connection with the matter. We are aware that schools in other parts of country have received similar malicious emails in recent days."

The lockdown came as police launched a probe into a "malicious hoax" email sent to schools in Manchester and Cheshire. Officers from Greater Manchester Police had surrounded three schools after the worrying communication was sent on Tuesday.

Email was sent out to all Leeds schools by the council warning about the threat

Further clarity coming out tonight about what went on today.

The Mirror has been told that an email was sent out to all Leeds schools by the council, warning of the threatening email that had been received. As a results some schools decided to lockdown. Some that locked down had received the email, some had not.

Parents began contacting Yorkshire Live to say their child's school had locked down - but this did not necessarily mean the schools had received the email themselves.

Parents begin to collect children

Mums and dads have been at school gates across Yorkshire collecting their children with extra security measures in place.

It comes after this morning's e-mail threat saw some schools keep youngsters inside buildings, closing doors and windows.

Staff were ordered to be extra vigilant as West Yorkshire Police launched an investigation.

Bradford Council 'supporting schools'

Bradford Council said they are supporting schools following the email threats sent this morning.

"We are aware that a number of schools in West Yorkshire, including the Bradford District, received an email today which is being investigated by the police.

"Police officers are providing reassurance and safety advice to affected schools. We are supporting our schools as they follow this advice. The safety of everyone in our schools is of course our top priority."

Nursery goes into mini-lockdown and 'secures all windows'

Mirror reader Tom explained his ten-month-old's nursery have secured all windows and has place under a 'mini-lockdown'.

He said: "They said although the Nursery has not been directly threatened or told they have to lockdown, but they have taken the decision to do so with their own "mini lockdown procedure".

"Essentially, this means that children will not be playing outside or going on outings. All windows and doors are secured, and have assured us our children are safe.

"Pick up procedure is a little different tonight, on pick up they have asked that all parents use the front door only. No parent feedback will be taking place as they will just be handing our child quickly. They have asked us to stand at the door until they have seen or heard from us on the camera so they can identify us.|

Leeds Council release statement

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said “We are aware of an ongoing situation relating to threats made towards a number of schools in Leeds and we are working closely with West Yorkshire Police to monitor the situation and provide support to schools.”

School says staff are being 'extra vigilant'

Gildersome Primary School posted on social media: "Some parents may be aware of a threat that has been made to some Leeds schools this morning. To reassure you, staff are being extra vigilant and we are following our normal safeguarding procedures to ensure the school site is secure.

"If there is any update or changes we will contact all parents and carers. Please do not call school at this time except in an emergency as we need to keep the phone lines clear."

Similar threats made on Tuesday

Two days ago, primary schools in Manchester, Cheshire and Liverpool were placed on lockdown following similar threats. Officers were sent to “provide reassurance” to teachers after receiving an “unpleasant" communication.

Chief Inspector Chris Boyd, of GMP’s City of Manchester Division, earlier said: ”We take reports of this nature very seriously and whilst we have not advised any schools to close, our officers will nevertheless be stepping up their high-visibility presence around schools at the end of the day today to provide reassurance to them and the wider public.”

Police confirm they are investigating

West Yorkshire Police has confirmed it is investigating the email sent to schools. A force spokesperson told the Mirror: "We are aware of an email which has been sent to a number of schools in West Yorkshire today.

"This is being investigated by police and officers are providing reassurance and safety advice to affected schools."

Email sent to parents in full

An email sent to parents from Sharp Land Primary School said: "Following information from police about a credible threat to all schools in Leeds, Sharp Land Primary School has implemented a 'soft invacuation'.

"This means that all children will be kept indoors for the full day. All gates remain closed and locked as usual and doors and windows within school will remain closed all day also. Can we please ask that visits to school today are restricted to urgent matters only?

"Please can we ask you to be vigilant when picking up your children at the end of their school day, and if you have any concerns about any individuals acting suspicious."
