Starfield continues the Bethesda tradition of having Companions who can join you on your journey, and if anything, it takes it one step further by allowing them to join your ship crew.

Starfield has a number of Companions you can recruit to your cause – just like in previous Bethesda titles in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series – but thanks to Starfield's Spaceship and Outpost mechanics they have more uses than ever. There are about 20 Companions in total so narrowing down one simple Best Companion in Starfield is a nigh-impossible task, so we've listed four of our favourites to hopefully help you build your crew.

Best Companions in Starfield

Here are our choices for the best Companions in Starfield. Like any ranking list, this is our opinion so we may not include your favourite Companion.

1. Sarah Morgan

The first Companion you can choose to take on (not counting Vasco, you don't have a choice with him) is also one of the best ones you can include in your crew. Sarah's skills include the following bonuses:

  • Astrodynamics 4
  • Leadership 2
  • Botany 1
  • Lasers 3

Sarah is a solid choice to keep around on your adventure. Her mixture of skills makes her a great all-rounder to keep around. Her Astrodynamics perk especially comes in handy as a member of your ship crew as it makes grav jumps consume less fuel.

2. Marika Boros

Marika can be found at the Viewport bar in New Atlantis, she's a solid Companion to pick up thanks to her combat-focused skills, which are as follows:

  • Ballistics 2
  • Particle Beam Weapon Systems 1
  • Shotgun Certification 1

Thanks to her aptitude for many types of weapons, Marika is a solid choice for your main Companion to follow you around if you're playing as a tanky character who will get in a lot of firefights. However, her weapon skills also make her a great choice for guarding your Outposts.

3. Andreja

Andreja is a member of Constellation. She's a bit less open than the likes of Sarah and Barrett, but despite the more private persona, she's a fantastic Companion thanks to her skills:

  • Stealth 4
  • Particle Beams 3
  • Energy Weapon Systems 2
  • Theft 1

For those of you like myself who are a fan of being sneaky and stealing items in Starfield, Andreja is undoubtedly the best Companion to have thanks to her skills in Stealth and Theft. But she's also a great choice for a member of your Ship's crew thanks to her other skills. And if you do end up stealing high-value items and contraband with her by your side, check out our recommendation for the best place to sell stolen items and contraband.

4. Barrett

Barrett is one of the first characters you meet in Starfield, and while you spend the majority of the game's opening searching for him, once you've got him he's an excellent Companion to have around thanks to his skills:

  • Starship Engineering 4
  • Particle Beam Weapon Systems 3
  • Robotics 2
  • Gastronomy 1

Despite being a solid pick as a Companion, Barrett is probably best suited to being a member of your ship's crew thanks to his skills in Starship Engineering and Particle Beam Weapon Systems.

Those are the four Companions that we've deemed to be the best in Starfield, but keep in mind that how useful a Companion is will depend on what type of character you choose to be. Andreja is a fantastic choice for how I'm playing the game, but she'd be wasted on someone who doesn't use any stealth, so it all comes down to your personal preference.
