NASA has sensationally revealed it will officially start hunting for aliens as the US space agency shares the results of a mysterious eight-month-long study into unidentified flying objects.

While they didn't offer much 'proof' of alien life, the agency said they're joining the 'hunt' for extraterrestrial life. This study was the first of many that will follow. But before NASA could move forward, they had to figure out what they could and couldn't study.

The 36-page document released by NASA lays out future plans to 'seriously look into UAP.' The purpose of this entirely new chapter in this agency's history is to: "move conjecture and conspiracy towards science and sanity," said Dr. Spergle, president of the UAP independent study team. "And you do that with data.”

"The top takeaway from the study is that there's a lot more to learn," says Bill Nelson, Agency administrator. "They did not find any evidence that UAPs have an extraterrestrial origin, but we don't know what they are," Nelson continued to say. He also said that NASA will now specifically have a director for UAP research.

For nine months, NASA's 16-person independent study team has laid the groundwork for future studies on the nature of UAPs for NASA and other organisations. The team worked on identifying 'how data gathered by civilian government entities, commercial data, and data from other sources can potentially be analysed' to shed light on UAPs.

Today, the team announced their results and recommendations, like a roadmap, for potential UAP data analysis by the agency going forward. NASA acknowledges the stigma around discussing and reporting UFOs and is hoping that their 'official' name will help curb that so that they can gather actual data.

They plan to create a system to allow individuals to report any flying objects so that NASA can have a transparent record where they can track and possibly publicly explain some instances or not.

"At present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple measurements, the lack of sensor metadata, and the lack of baseline data. Making a concerted effort to improve all aspects is vital, and NASA’s expertise should be comprehensively leveraged as part of a robust and systematic data acquisition strategy within the whole-of-government framework," said the summary of the results.

“Exploring the unknown in space and the atmosphere is at the heart of who we are at NASA,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

“Understanding the data we have surrounding unidentified anomalous phenomena is critical to helping us draw scientific conclusions about what is happening in our skies. Data is the language of scientists and makes the unexplainable, explainable.”

Unidentified anomalous phenomena are 'of interest to national security and air safety,' and the study aligns with one of NASA’s goals to ensure aircraft safety. Verifying or explaining any observation is almost impossible without access to 'an extensive data set.'

"Thus, the focus of the study is to inform NASA what possible data could be collected in the future to discern the nature of UAP scientifically," says a press release from the agency.

The NASA official responsible for orchestrating the study is Daniel Evans, the assistant deputy associate administrator for research at NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. As previously announced, the independent study team is chaired by David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation.

“NASA has brought together some of the world's leading scientists, data and artificial intelligence practitioners, aerospace safety experts, all with a specific charge, which is to tell us how to apply the full focus of science and data to UAP,” said Evans. “The findings will be released to the public in conjunction with NASA’s principles of transparency, openness, and scientific integrity.”

This public meeting took place at the agency’s headquarters in Washington DC from 10 a.m. EST (3 p.m. UK time) today. The full report is published online. Agency administrator Bill Nelson, along with other NASA leaders, joined the chair of the UAP study group, David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation, to host the briefing.

NASA's report appears to back up the military personnel who testified before the US Congress two months ago, claiming to have experiences with UFOs and UAPs. "Recently, many credible witnesses, often military aviators, have reported seeing objects they did not recognise over US airspace."

"Most of these events have since been explained, but a small handful cannot be immediately identified as known human-made or natural phenomena. These events are now collectively referred to as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAP."

The group says the commercial satellite industry does have the capability to take higher-resolution images: "Although every point on Earth does not have constant high-resolution coverage, the panel finds nonetheless that such commercial constellations could offer a powerful complement to the detection and study of UAP when coincident collection occurs."

"NASA's assets can play a vital role by directly determining whether specific environmental factors are associated with certain reported UAP behaviours or occurrences," the report further says.

One reporter asked NASA's director if he had thoughts on the testimony given to Congress two months ago about the government's knowledge of extraterrestrial lif, and Bill Nelson had one thing to say: “Whatever he said, where’s the evidence? That’s my response. ”
