Coronation Street fans have called the ITV soap another 'version of Hollyoaks' after accusing it of failing to prioritize its older characters' arcs.

The outrage comes after the show announced on Twitter it had cast Luca Toolan to play Mason Radcliffe, a bad boy who's set to taunt Dylan Wilson, in an emotional upcoming storyline about bullying.

Despite excitement over the 19-year-old's addition to the award-winning soap from the majority of its viewers, some Corrie followers weren't too impressed by the latest update. The long running show has been condemned by a handful of disgruntled folks for allegedly favouring Weatherfield's younger characters at the expense of its veteran residents, such as Gail Platt and Audrey Roberts.

"Corrie is slowly becoming ITV's version of Hollyoaks," one frustrated person wrote on Twitter. "Someone needs to put an end to it."

"No hard feelings towards the younger actors, but they really need to stop forgetting about their long-term cast members... Gail, Sally, Eileen, Tracy, etc," another person said. One person even claimed they were "sick" of Corrie "throwing in so many new characters", adding, "Please can we focus on the characters we actually care about and are the show's bread n butter!!!"

"I'm TIRED of Gail and Sally, especially being limited to comedy now and only making a handful of appearances every few months. I really want to see them both get serious storylines again because they can be great when it's hard-hitting stuff," chorused one particularly nostalgic viewer. Perhaps one of Gail's most iconic storylines was her marriage to legendary soap villain Richard Hillman, who attempted to murder the entire Platt family after confessing that he'd killed Maxine Peacock.

Others have called for Coronation Street to introduce cast more actors from an older generation, insisting, "We need a new set of Blanche & Norris."

Not everyone agrees that Corrie has a bias towards younger talent, however. Beverley Callard, who first stepped foot on the cobbles as Liz McDonald in 1989, was quick to hail the show's bosses for celebrating the value of older women in society.

"Our business is very ageist but Coronation Street is leading the fightback against that,” the 66-year-old said. "It features strong women and shows that when you reach 55 your love life isn’t finished Liz will be wearing Lycra and high heels when she’s hobbling down the street. It’s fantastic."
