Student dies after limbs ripped off by boat propeller during dip with her family
A 24-year-old tourist died after having two limbs ripped off by a boat propeller as she enjoyed a dip in the sea with her family.
Yuranis Vanegas Peña was in the bay with loved ones when the boat operator didn’t spot her in the water. The vessel ran over the young tourist with the propeller cutting off an arm and a leg, according to reports.
The shocking incident took place at Haynes Cay on the Colombian island of San Andrés, in the Caribbean on September 8. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but arrived without vital signs after suffering severe blood loss.
Rescue workers reportedly pictured retrieving Yuranis's leg (Jam Press)Police spokesperson Carlos Solano said: “The captain of the motorboat, who stopped to help at the scene, provided first aid and took the victim to hospital where she unfortunately died.” The captain also voluntarily handed himself over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to help with the ongoing investigation.
Yuranis was a student from Cajicá, north east of the capital Bogota, who was visiting the Caribbean region on holiday with family members. Following her death, the authorities said they plan to make the area only available to swimmers in the coming months.

A similar incident took place off the Rosario Islands in Colombia on August 20 when a Costa Rican tourist was struck by a boat propeller while swimming in the sea. The 21-year-old man remains in intensive care after suffering severe injuries to his buttocks and left thigh.
While in July a 6-year-old girl died in a freak accident after being accidentally run over by her mum's boat while swimming in Lake Pleasant in Arizona in the USA. Eyewitnesses at the scene said the mum was operating the boat when, unbeknown to her, the child had entered the water.
