A man had his lower jaw bitten off after being "ambushed" by a grizzly bear during a horrific mauling that left him in agonising pain.

61-year-old Rudy Noorlander, who owns and operates Alpine Adventures, had rented out some of his all-terrain vehicles to other hunters, when he heard they were struggling to find a deer in Gallatin County, Montana, on Friday. He joined them in the search when he suddenly stumbled across a small adult grizzly bear.

“A 10-foot mega bear appeared out of nowhere. He had bear spray. He had a gun in his hand. The bear, he said, from the moment he saw it to when it was on him was one second,” Katelynn Davis, Noorlander’s daughter told KSLTV. “So he thought, ‘I’ll just fight.’ and that’s what he did. So he tried to shoot. His gun misfired. He tried to punch the bear. He punched it in the nose. And then right after the punch to the nose. The bear locked onto his jaw and ripped his jaw.”

The grizzly bear gave Noorlander a collapsed lung, a huge scratch on his chest, and bites to his arms and thighs. "The grizzly left a large scratch down his right chest, bit his arms, legs, and to top it all off, gave him what Rudy describes as the most disgusting French kiss of his life," his daughter added.

He, along with the hunters, was able to scare the bear away and call for help. However, despite calling for help, the first helicopter had to wait for a second helicopter to assist in keeping the bears away as they were still in the area. He was forced to wait for two hours before he was able to be rescued and taken to Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center. The 61-year-old had an emergency surgery before being flown to the University of Utah Hospital.

"Rudy was lying on the ground for an additional 2 hours (while still fully conscious) until he was able to be picked up by the flight crew," the GoFundMe reads. "An amazing feat of strength as he did not pass out from fear, pain, or blood loss." He is now in a stable condition.

“To see the strongest person I know is not okay. It’s like horrifying. but he’s so strong that I think his sheer will will push him through this,” his daughter said. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Noorlander's extensive surgeries which have led to huge medical bills. Over $16,000 has already been raised out of a target of $25,000.

The US Forest Service put in place an emergency closure in the area so authorities could find the bear, but the animal has not been found, and no bears have been spotted in the area since Monday, according to Montana wildlife spokesperson Morgan Jacobsen. The agency is continuing its investigation into the attack.
