Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Joe Lo Truglio in big career move with powerful new project

Joe Lo Truglio has moved away from his comfort zone of comedy to take on a brand new project his 13-year-old self would be proud of.

The actor, best known for his hilarious work in front of the camera on hit sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine and movies such as Superbad, has headed behind the lens and into an entirely new genre. The 52-year-old's directorial debut sees intense horror Outpost hit our screens.

The project, however, wasn't all completely new territory for Joe as he completed the exciting project with his wife Beth Dover. She took on the main role as Kate, an abused woman who takes a job as a fire lookout in the mountains of northern Idaho. The story follows Kate's hope of a peaceful solitude to help heal her trauma, but her PTSD and isolation soon take over and she has a fight to save herself - and the town.

Opening up on his decision to step away from the limelight and into a completely different genre, Joe exclusively told the Mirror: "I've been a fan of genre since I was 13 and I I knew at some point I wanted to indulge in making a movie." He confessed The Shining played a huge part in his thought methods, explaining how he used the iconic movie as "a model".

But he also feels both comedy and horror "operate in the same space in many respects," describing how they "both kind of elicit immediate reactions". He said: "I feel much of it is timing. There's a music to a scene, there's a music to comedy, and there's a music to horror. And they're very similar in many ways. So besides my original love for the genre, it wasn't too tough a transition for me going to the horror genre.

"I love comedy, it was something I've always been into, so I think that taking the experience I've had in comedy and that timing really helped the pacing of the movie and in particular in the editing room actually, you know, seeing how creating a bit of tension, and then the release of a punch line or a scream really revealed itself to me while we were cutting together the movie."

Joe admitted that while he had tried to keep the cost of the project down, the idea of shooting on top of a mountain - at 6,300 feet to be precise - quickly became a bit of a logistical struggle. However, he believes the elements helped create a fantastic surrounding to shoot, even when not always planned.

Describing the surprising amount of bugs on the set as well as how Beth "does not like the outdoors" he explained how her fear is real in one key scene at the top of the fire tower and helps create the gripping feel for the viewer. "It did add to the kind of tension for her character and the panic for her character being up there. The tower itself actually did sway a little bit. One of our other actors, Becky Ann Baker, who plays the character of Bertha in the movie, also was a bit unnerved by it."

He added: "You know, all that fear that you saw on there, we had about 45 minutes to shoot that scene. And the gusts were going about 20-25 miles per hour. It was quite hairy...it did add to the energy and the manic nature of that scene."

When pressed on what fans can expect from the production, he confirmed there will be the "tension and menace" related to a horror movie before it "unleashes itself" in a "gory" third act. And he is very much aware that this is one of the key moments that will grab or turn away an audience, openly admitting: "I love living in that in that area. I'd much rather people hate the movie incredibly or love the movie incredibly, then kind of be 'meh' down the middle."

He also confessed that working alongside the likes of Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow on previous projects, as well as his time in the sketch comedy world, helped set him up for his debut as he got to learn the best methods in which to work. As for his tips for anyone out there looking to make the switch and become a director: "Don't be a d**k, and make it about the work."

Outpost is available on digital download in the UK from September 11.
