Paul Reubens' death has been confirmed after he died at the age of 70 at the end of July, with an official statement posted on his Instagram page at the time.

And now the cause of the Pee-wee Herman actor has been unveiled. According to his death certificate obtained by The Blast, Paul died of "acute myelogenous leukaemia" and "acute hypoxic respiratory failure".

At the time of his passing the statement revealed that he "bravely and privately fought cancer for years", which came as a surprise to many at the time. It is now confirmed that as a result of his illnesses, he suffered the aforementioned complications including blood cancer and respiratory failure, as well as "metastatic lung cancer", according to reports.

According to the NHS, acute myeloid leukaemia, or AML, is a form of leukaemia, which is cancer of the white blood cells. They state: "Acute leukaemia means it progresses quickly and aggressively, and usually requires immediate treatment. Acute leukaemia is classified according to the type of white blood cells affected."

Meanwhile, acute hypoxic respiratory failure is described as "a condition where you don't have enough oxygen in the tissues in your body (hypoxia) or when you have too much carbon dioxide in your blood (hypercapnia)," according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Paul's death certificate also confirmed that the actor was to be cremated and laid to rest at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

At the end of July, when Paul's death was announced, the statement posted on his Instagram page read: "Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness."

The statement then revealed that Paul "bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit". It went on: "A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit."

The post saw an image of Paul posted, alongside a note he had written for his fans before he sadly passed away. Paul's touching note read: "Please accept my apology for not going public with what I've been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you."

Paul's career began in the 1970s after he joined comedy troupe the Groundlings in Los Angeles where he worked as an improv comedian and stage actor. He later launched The Pee-wee Herman Show in 1980, with his portrayal of Pee-wee Herman becoming his most famed role.
