A woman who died after being attacked by two Rottweilers was an animal lover whose own chocolate Labrador was a guest of honour at her wedding.

Marie Stevens, 40, was found dead at her Liverpool home after sustaining bite wounds on her arms and legs when she pet the dogs on August 18 on Park Lane West in Netherton. Ms Stevens was bitten after she "tried to stroke" the two dogs, who were on a leash at the time. Ms Stevens had been bitten multiple times. Paramedics rushed her to hospital and she was later sent home where she later died.

Police arrested a 41-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman on suspicion of being in charge of a dangerously out of control dog in a public place before both were bailed.

Today, it emerged that Ms Stevens was such a dog lover that her own Labrador was the guest of honour when she tied the knot with her husband Steve. One friend told the MailOnline: "She really loved her dog and animals in general. It is awful what has happened to her."

It comes as loved ones paid tribute to the joyful "animal lovers" who would "brighten a day when it was dull". Lainey Dawson said: "I worked with Marie. Marie was such a joy she made everyone laugh with her cracking one liners. She knew how to brighten a day when it was dull. I'm thinking of her family and friends."

Jailea Sophia said: "We worked together in a care home. Marie was a very bubbly and happy person. She used to make me smile and laugh everyday at work asking to wear my big fluffy coat on her breaks. I will miss her."

Danielle X Twigg said: "I am absolutely heartbroken Marie Campbell was the kindest most loving lady I've ever met. I can't believe it. Sending love to her partner and family. Devastating."

Hayley Palmer said: "Such a beautiful woman loved our time working together Rest forever Marie Campbell xxx" Merseyside Police confirmed Ms Stevens was found dead at her home in Brighton-le-Sands almost three weeks on from the attack on September 3.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We can confirm a woman who was injured in a dog attack in Netherton last month has sadly died. At around 5.45pm on Friday 18 August it was reported Marie Stevens, 40, was bitten to the legs and arms by two Rottweiler dogs on Park Lane West. Police officers gave Ms Stevens first aid until an ambulance arrived and took her to hospital, where she was treated and later discharged.

"A 41-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman from Netherton were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury. Both suspects were later bailed with conditions. Just after 9.10am on Sunday 3 September, police were called by the North West Ambulance Service to Ms Stevens’ home on Holden Road, in Brighton-le-Sands to a report she had collapsed and sadly died at home. A post mortem determined the primary cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. Her next of kin have been informed."
