A money-savvy mum who saved thousands of pounds transforming her council house with DIY tricks has revealed how she left her kitchen looking unrecognisable for less than £200. Celene, 25, from Rotherham, moved into her council home two years ago, and in that time she's transformed the property, which she hopes to buy in the future.

A student midwife and mental health support worker, she's also got a great eye for interior design. So it's little surprise she's amassed thousands of followers on TikTok and Instagram, where she shares tips and tricks. Talking to the Mirror, Celene said she estimates she's saved thousands of pounds with her DIY approach to her home makeover.

"I have slowly made the house a home over the years by making small improvements. The renovations have all been done on a budget," the mum explained. "They have made a massive difference to how you feel when walking into my home, it's all very neutral tones and relaxing. All the rooms feel as one."

But of all the rooms - and there are several beautifully decorated options - Celene said she's most proud of her kitchen. "People generally think I have had a new kitchen fitted and can't believe the transformation. It cost me less than £200.

"I painted the cupboards myself, painted the times, wrapped the kitchen units and accessorised using products from shops like B&M. I have probably saved thousands of pounds," explained the keen stylist.

Celene also shared a step-by-step breakdown in one of her previous viral posts. As per her video, she refreshed her worktops by adding vinyl wrap from Wilko. Celene believes she used four of the rolls, which come in at £5 each. She also purchased new cupboard handles from Amazon for £30.

As for the paint, she opted for two different colours from Frenchic, and she purchased two £8 rails from Ikea, before adding on several hooks and a flower basket. Elsewhere, Celene sourced tea, coffee and sugar pots from B&M Bargains for £2.50, and she replaced her kitchen sink with one she purchased second-hand. Sharing tips for anyone looking to replicate her success, Celene added: "My advice would be, sometimes less is more. To always pick a colour scheme and stick to it throughout all the rooms in the house. Buy timeless pieces for your home that aren't going to be out of fashion in a month's time."
