It’s impossible to scroll through Instagram or TikTok for more than 20 seconds without seeing a well-dressed woman in a waistcoat. A 2023 trend that epitomises the quiet luxury and old money aesthetics, it’s one that’s been lapped up by celebrities, influencers and retailers alike.

Waistcoats have taken the fashion world by storm, fast becoming the go-to wardrobe statement of the year. Originally a menswear item, the tailored garm has undergone a modern makeover throughout the decades, now that ‘it’ piece for the season as we approach autumn.

Famous faces like Rochelle Humes, Frankie Bridge and Fearne Cotton have all been seen sporting the look, and what’s most exciting about the trend is its versatility and timelessness. Whether paired with tailored trousers, jeans, or even shorts, these waist-hugging wonders effortlessly elevate any look.

As they continue to grow in popularity, we’ve scoured the high street for some of the very best designs to add to your capsule wardrobe collection, including styles from River Island, Marks and Spencer, Nobody’s Child and more. So if you want to try out the trend, here’s where you should be looking:

River Island

This Brown Button Up Waistcoat from high street favourite River Island is the exact style worn by Rochelle Humes on an episode of This Morning in August. Made in a linen blend, it's cool and casual, coming in at £38. You could style it with your favourite jeans, or take a leaf from celeb stylist Amber Jackson's fashion bible and team it with the matching trousers, which are £40.

New Look

Another celeb-loved style from an affordable retailer is this Black Linen-Look Waistcoat from New Look, which was praised by Frankie Bridge as 'a great alternative for a nice top'. She loved it's racerback style and the fact it can be easily dressed up or down. Wear it with a midi skirt and flat sandals on warm-weather afternoons, or jeans and stilettos for an elegant evening outfit. What's even better is that it's under £30, making it a total steal.

Mango

Whether you're dressing for brunch or the office, this pinstriped waistcoat from Mango is such a chic choice. Priced at £45.99, it comes in sizes XXS to XXL, boasting a v-neck and two welt pockets on the front. In a gorgeous greige shade, it's a great alternative to the near sold-out cream version worn by Rochelle Humes.

Nobody's Child

Released as part of the Fearne Cotton Happy Place collection, this Green Linen-blend Waistcoat is the ultimate pick if you want to inject a bit of colour into your wardrobe. Expertly crafted with a dash of linen, this summertime waistcoat is a dream in a soft sage green. Tailored details include welt pockets and an adjustable strap at the back. Rock it as a two-piece with the matching wide leg trousers.

Marks and Spencer

It's no surprise that the M&S x England waistcoats in navy and white are almost sold out after such a stellar performance from the Lionesses this summer, but fear not, because the retailer also has a classic black option that should fit the bill nicely. This waistcoat is a smart style to add to your occasionwear or workwear wardrobe. Crafted to a tailored fit, it's fully lined with added stretch for comfort, with a five-button fastening and two front pockets for an elevated look. It also comes in sage but unsurprisingly, that's almost sold out, too. Shop it here for £39.50.

Albaray

One of Holly Willoughby's favourite brands often sported on This Morning is Albaray, and their Organic Cotton Waistcoat is in the sale, down from £59 to £35. It's completely sold out on the M&S website but you can still get it directly from Albaray. Neutral tones are really leading this trend and offering that 'expensive' look without breaking the bank, which is something we can all get on board with.

Mint Velvet

If you hadn't noticed by now, Rochelle Humes has been the queen of the waistcoat trend. In August, she wore a PrettyLittleThing skirt with this knitted waistcoat from Mint Velvet, which is a gorgeous wardrobe addition for autumn. Woven with cotton for added breathability, this ivory knitted waistcoat is finished with asymmetric buttons for a modern take on a classic silhouett]e, however, it does come in with a higher price than some of the others, marked up at £89.

H&M

Much more budget-friendly is the H&M suit waistcoat, which is under £15. Short and fitted, this twill waistcoat has a deep, square neckline instead of the typical v-neck, giving it a bit of an edge. It comes in grey or black, and can be paired with a matching skirt or blazer for an office ensemble, or dressed down for a street style look.

Stradivarius

Hello houndstooth. Available in four sizes, this short fitted houndstooth waistcoat with a V-neck from Stradivarius is bang on trend for the 'ber' months. Priced at £25.99, it's part of a co-ord, but not with wide leg trousers or a skirt as you might expect, but some bermuda shorts that give it a dangerously cool vibe. Pair with loafers and you'll be ready to take on the world.
