'World's most inbred' family welcome new blue-eyed baby
A West Virginia family that has been deemed America's most inbred has welcomed a baby boy, whose grandmother proudly held him in a recent video by documentary filmmaker and photographer Mark Laita.
Laita has been filming the family for years, posting clips of them that show their lifestyle in a quaint community in the mountainous state to his 4.9 million-subscriber YouTube channel Soft White Underbelly.
Last week, he took the Whittakers to the state fair and documented the experience in a video titled "The Whittakers Go To The State Fair." It opens with him and his partner approaching their humble house, where they're immediately greeted by Betty, the family's matriarch.
"Who's the little baby?" Laita asks her, and she points to 20-year-old Brandon, who's sitting in a chair nearby talking to his grandfather, the family patriarch, Larry.

Mum's touching gesture to young son who died leaves Morrisons shopper in tearsBrandon introduces himself and states that the child is his — he had brought the baby with him as he and his brother visited the family that day from Wyoming County, about a 45-minute drive from where the family lives in Odd, a hamlet about 80 miles (128.7km) south of the capital city of Charleston.
The baby, whose name is Braxton, grins as Betty bounces him on her lap. Betty beams with joy, and then the camera pans to Larry, who also has a huge smile.
Braxton is Brandon's second child — he also has a girl, who wasn't named in the video, Larry revealed. The 20-year-old dad works in a coal mine, he said.
In an interview on the Koncrete KLIPS podcast, Laita said meeting the family for the first time was a shocking experience, and described what his first impression was like when he tried to approach them.
He explained: “It was like that little scene from Deliverance that everyone knows. We came around to this road, which turns into a country road, which turns into a dirt road, and we come to this trailer and then a little shack on the other side of the road.
"And there’s these people walking around and their eyes are going in different directions and they are barking at us. And then one guy, you would look at him in the eye or say anything and he would just scream and go running away, and his pants would fall around his ankles, and he would go running off and go and kick a garbage can. And this would happen over and over. It was out of control - the craziest thing I have ever seen."
