A hero lost his life while trying to save two children after they got into trouble at a waterfall.

Mohananeethan Muruganantharajah, 27, was found dead on Friday afternoon at Sgwd Y Pannwr waterfall in Bannau Brycheiniog, also known as Brecon Beacons National Park.

Dyfed-Powys Police were part of a multi-agency response after reports of a man having plunged into the water but not resurfaced at around 4.40pm. An air ambulance, as well as fire crews, and mountain rescue teams were also at the scene in a desperate search for the man. Tragically, his body was located in the water shortly after 7pm with the aid of an underwater camera, the force reported.

However, due to challenging conditions at the site, it was not possible to recover him that evening. Divers were subsequently called in the following morning. Mohananeethan's family is receiving support from specialist officers.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We were called to Sgwd Y Pannwr waterfall, Ystradfellte, at approximately 4.40pm on Friday (1 September) to a report of a man having gone into the water to rescue two children and not come out."
