A “kind and gentle” dad of two killed when he was struck by a car as he cycled home from work has been pictured for the first time.

Joel Carriedo, 47, was one of two people killed in a “rampage” in Coventry on Sunday morning. He had been cycling home after a night shift at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire on Sunday morning when he was hit.

The same car had earlier also hit and killed a 44-year-old pedestrian. West Midlands Police have confirmed a 33-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act. Today, tributes were paid to the popular father of two.

In a statement issued through the police, his family said: "Joel was a loving husband and father of two, who worked extremely hard as a healthcare assistant at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire. He will be missed dearly by all that knew him. We thank all of the community for their continued support during this very difficult time. May he rest in peace and God bless his soul."

Mr Carriedo joined the University Hospital in 2017 and worked on Ward 40 (Care of the Elderly) before moving to Ward 32 (Gastroenterology) a few months ago. A colleague told MailOnline he had recently transferred from working day shifts to nights and had not long ago moved home.

A friend added: “This is a tragedy. He was cycling home after a night shift and had only just returned to work after being on holiday with his family. He was so well liked, a brilliant father and colleague. We'll miss him.” Another described him as: "A great person, very kind and gentle'.

She added another worker had been walking home when she saw paramedic attempting to save someone on the ground in front of a small crowd of people. The owner of the home discovered the wreck of the Mercedes in his front drive. He had heard a loud bang as he watched Match of the Day.

A police spokesman added: “A man arrested on suspicion of murder after two people were killed when they were hit by a car in Coventry has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

“We detained a 33-year-old man in Beckbury Road following a series of collisions in the city around 8am yesterday morning (3 September). A 44-year-old pedestrian who was struck on Gosford Street and a cyclist, aged 47, who was hit on Woodway Lane sadly died of their injuries.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have tragically lost their lives, and we'll be doing all we can to support them during this deeply distressing time. Another pedestrian who was struck on Gosford Street has been treated for injuries which are not life threatening.

“We're not looking for anyone else in connection with what happened, and from the information we have this is not being treated as terror-related. Our enquiries are continuing and anyone who can assist is asked to contact us via Live Chat on our website, or by calling 101, and quote log 854 of 3/9/23.”
