Man who survived crash that killed three of his pals charged with drink driving

A man who was in a previous car crash that injured him and killed three other people has been charged with drink driving and a host of other motoring offences unconnected to the fatal smash.

Shane Loughlin, 32, of Cardiff, was stopped by police in the Llandaff North area of the city during the early hours of Saturday morning, September 2 and charged with a number of offences. Police said he had been arrested on suspicion of a number of driving offences, including drink driving.

He has since been charged with driving over the prescribed limit and driving while disqualified and will appear before Cardiff Magistrates' Court later today. In March, Mr Loughlin, who is from the Rumney area of Cardiff, was a passenger in a fatal car crash in St Mellons, which killed three people and left him injured.

Eve Smith, 21, Darcy Ross, 21 and Rafel Jeanne, 24, died in the collision which took place just after 2am on 4 March. Mr Loughlin was critically injured in the crash and taken to hospital, along with Sophie Russon, 20. The five friends had been on a night out in Newport when the car is believed to have veered off the road crashing into trees as they travelled along the A48.

In a statement, the South Wales Police said: "A Cardiff man has been charged with a number of driving offences after officers from the Roads Policing Unit conducted a proactive stop in the Llandaff North area in the early hours Saturday, September 2. "Shane Loughlin, 32, was stopped by officers on Aberporth Road at around 4.20am and was arrested on suspicion of a number of driving offences. He has since been charged last night with driving over the prescribed limit and driving while disqualified. He will appear before Cardiff Magistrates' Court today (Monday, September 4)."
