Comedian Eddie Kadi could be this year’s surprise Strictly sensation.

The 40-year-old is being tipped to follow the same trajectory as presenter Hamza Yassin who captured the hearts of the nation last year. A Strictly source said: “Eddie’s had a breakthrough year and is really popular with his fans but has not had mainstream success yet and will be an unknown quantity to a lot of Strictly viewers.

"But that is set to change. He is really likeable, and the word is he can dance. Many are likening him to Hamza, who eventually won.” Another rival for the Glitterball trophy is Angela Rippon – at the age of 79. The former newsreader will be the show’s oldest ever competitor obut insiders say they have been astounded by her level of fitness.

She can still do the splits and regularly does ballet, tennis and Pilates. Even if she is not the best dancer, she could still take the public with her and Strictly sources say she could be a “dark horse”. The two stars are up against actors Bobby Brazier, Layton Williams and Adam Thomas, presenters Angela Scanlon, Nikita Kanda and Jody Cundy, actresses Amanda Abbington and Ellie Leach, reality star Zara McDermott, and newsreader Krishnan Guru- Murthy.

BBC One will launch its trailer for Strictly tonight in which the professional dancers perform a stunning routine filmed at the Tate Britain in London. The pros for the upcoming series, which starts later this month, include Dianne Buswell, Nadiya Bychkova and Graziano Di Prima.
