Newsboy's horseracing tips for Saturday on ITV, including Sandown Nap

Put one over the bookies with POTAPOVA (2.25) at Sandown today.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained mare does not win often but she captured the Virgin Bet Atalanta Stakes 12 months ago in convincing fashion at 16-1.

With Ryan Moore booked she won’t be those odds today but still looks a value selection having not been able to add to her score since,

Despite having black type from her Group 3 victory, which is so valuable for a breeding career, she was presumably kept in training because Stoute believed there would be more to come.

That has yet to happen. She was found to have an irregular heartbeat after being pulled up at Goodwood in May but was not beaten far when a rallying fifth at Epsom and Royal Ascot in June.

She has not run since but her best performances at three and four were both over today’s course and distance and a return visit can pay dividends.

MORTLAKE (3.38), namechecked during the Boat Race, can get a mention for next year’s Classics by winning the Virgin Bet Solario Stakes.

The Sandown Group 3 is notable for having been used as a stepping stone for Kingman, Masar and Too Darn Hot on their way to Classic or Group 1 honours.

Mortlake is not from either of those stars’ camps, though Juddmonte and Godolphin are both represented here, but don’t be put off.

Ralph Beckett is enjoying a blistering campaign. It’s only September, yet the trainer is soon to hit the century for the campaign while earnings in Britain have soared past £3 million.

Mortlake made little impression on his debut but created a huge impression when getting off the mark at Leicester where he scored by a widening five lengths and could be an exciting prospect.

On the same card 12 months ago DUAL IDENTITY (3.00) finished a fast-finishing second in the 1m2f handicap behind Protagonist during a productive campaign.

He has not been able to build on that this year but has not enjoyed much luck either. He was unlucky at Epsom in June and when 12th in the Royal Hunt Cup, he actually finished second in his group after again meeting interference.

His handicap mark has come down to just 1lb higher than when he last ran at Sandown. Expect him to make his course and distance experience count.

LYNDON B (1.50) can end a losing sequence stretching back to July last year in the 7f handicap.

SILKY WILKIE (2.40) should be hard to beat so long as Thursday’s night’s exertions in the Racing League have not taken their toll.

The Karl Burke-trained sprinter is turned out again quickly for the Beverley Bullet 48 hours after running a very solid fourth in the £100,000 handicap at Newcastle.

Despite a busy campaign he has been a very reliable horse to follow this year and can be excused his one recent below par run at Goodwood when he was trying to take on Highfield Princess.

PERFECT PLAY (2.05) has only scored twice in ten starts for the Ossie Ardiles Syndicate but he has hit the woodwork plenty of times and has every chance of finding the back of the net with Joe Fanning taking over for the first time.

Charlie Appleby has endured a difficult summer with no wins at Ascot, Goodwood or York but hopes to reignite the Classic aspirations of MILITARY ORDER (3.20) at Chester.

The Lingfield Derby Trial winner hasn’t run since finishing last in the Derby but hopefully a 91 day break has put him right and he can record the victory that will set him up for a tilt at the St Leger in two weeks’ time.

Chester specialist BOARDMAN (1.35) is the one to be on in the opening race. Three of his eight victories were recorded here, the most recent back in May where he won by three lengths.
