A mother was heartbroken to find her cat dead in a bin after the beloved pet went missing.

Yasmin Smith had spent Wednesday evening scouring her neighbourhood in search of Gin, but her quest took a grim turn when she stumbled upon a post in a local Facebook group, indicating that a cat had been struck by a vehicle near her residence.

Yasmin ventured out to investigate and found traces of blood on the road but there was no sign of Gin. With the help of her father, they made the horrifying discovery of Gin's body discarded in a bin near the family home in Dangerhall, Midlothian.

In an emotional interview today with Edinburgh Live, Yasmin said: "My cat had been missing, I have been looking for him and couldn't find him. On the Danderhall Facebook page I saw that there had been a cat hit by a car and left at the side of the road, this was on the road at the back of my house. I have a one-year-old baby so I had to get him ready and walk round with the pram to see if I could find him."

She continued: "When I got to the road there was blood everywhere but no cat. My dad came to help me look in the bushes incase he had been placed in the grass. To our horror there was blood on the street litter bin next to the Danderhall doctors surgery, my dad lifted the top of the bin and underneath rubbish we found my poor cat had been dumped in this bin."

The tragic incident ended with Yasmin having to retrieve Gin's lifeless body from the bin. "We had to get him out of there, he had already passed and not in a good state. I'm devastated," she said. "I had been shouting on Gin the whole night and out looking for him and did not realise for one minute he was in a public bin right next to my house."

Yasmin has since laid Gin to rest in her garden, a place he loved to roam, allowing the family to remember him fondly. Overwhelmed with grief, she expressed her disbelief, saying: "I don't know how anyone could ever do this."

She pointed out that Gin was microchipped, making it unnecessary and cruel to dispose of him in a bin. "He was chipped there was no reason to dump him in a bin. There are local vets. I contacted 101 but sadly a cat is not treated as an accident on the road, I really hope one day this will change."

Yasmin emphasized that cats are cherished pets, just like dogs, and deserve the same respect and care. She lamented, "A cat is someone's pet no different to a dog. If I hadn't went to look for him I would never have found him and he would have ended up being picked up with the rubbish by the council."

She condemned the person responsible for this act, branding it as "disgusting". The incident occurred at a junction in Danderhall, where Yasmin believes the speed limit should be reduced to 20 mph to prevent such tragedies.
