Tony Bellew repeats Daniel Dubois 'quit' theory after Oleksandr Usyk defeat

Tony Bellew has insisted Daniel Dubois took the easy way out against Oleksandr Usyk - having done the same against Joe Joyce.

Dubois was stopped by unified champion Usyk in the ninth round of their heavyweight world title fight last Saturday. The fight was overshadowed by controversy as Dubois put Usyk down in round five with a low blow, but many fans and fighters were convinced the punch was legal.

Usyk landed a stiff jab which saw Dubois take a knee and he was then counted out after standing up once the referee had got to 10. The ending was reminiscent of Dubois' first professional defeat to Joyce three years ago and Bellew has criticised Dubois for 'quitting' again.

"Have we all forgotten that Daniel Dubois watched the referee count to 10 while on one knee? It’s not the first time he’s done it. It’s not unfair [to call him a quitter] because against Joe Joyce he had a fractured orbital bone and again he watched the referee count to 10 while on one knee, then when the referee gets to 10 he gets straight up," Bellew told Safe Betting Sites.

"He’s done it again now. I don’t want to call someone a quitter but a man once told me, 'Son don’t you ever spew it.’ Spew it means to quit. The first time you spew it is the hardest and after the first time it only gets easier and easier and I’m sorry to say that Daniel Dubois has spewed it twice."

Dubois is appealing the defeat as his coach Don Charles claims they were "conned" out of a win by Usyk. The Ukrainian laughed off claims of the punch being legal by pulling up his t-shirt to show off his waistline at the post-fight press conference, also calling out Dubois for a street fight to settle the score.

Bellew added of Dubois' defeat: “People keep asking me why I only say it about Daniel Dubois? Well, Kell Brook was a very good friend of mine in the past and we were both under the same platform at Matchroom. He spewed it against Gennady Golovkin and he spewed it against Errol Spence."

"I’ve got no problem with saying that but when the going gets tough he looks for a way out. Daniel Dubois is exactly the same. People say well why didn’t you say that about AJ against Andy Ruiz? AJ never quit, he was just completely exhausted and spent."
