Stranger arrives at man's front door with $1million cheque - but he's not home
An official carrying a $1million prize cheque arrived at one lucky winner's house - only to discover he wasn't home.
Howie Guja, from Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes, a prize-based gaming company, turned up at Edwin Walker's property in Albertville, Alabama, to deliver the life-changing sum of money. But the lucky winner didn't answer.
Mr Guja had made the trip from New York City and was armed with a giant cheque and champagne. He discovered from neighbours that delivery worker Mr Walker was at work down the road, where he was eventually able to unite the winner with his prize.
The prize-giver explained he is sometimes met with skepticism on the doorstep: “You’re knocking on the door and someone thinks it must be a solicitor or a salesman and they don’t wanna come to the door.
"Then, you’ll see them peek out and they see the flowers, they see everything, they see this patch and next thing you know the door is swinging open, they’re in their pajamas, their underwear, whatever it might be. They’re very, very happy. So, you know, it’s really life-changing."
Woman was 'adamant' she would win top lottery prize - then pockets $200,000Mr Walker added: “I was floored. I always had hopes but I never really expected it. So, it’s, like I say, it’s a big surprise.”
Mr Guja says he is often asked what he does if the prize winner is not home when he arrives with the cheque. His parent company says all winners are notified in advance of a mystery visit - but this did not seem to be the case for Mr Walker.
Mr Walker revealed he will share his winnings with those he loves. He said: “The church will get some of it, I can get back to working on my house, try to get it finished up, and then just try to help the family.”
